OK, this is a silly one...are sharps containers reusable, or do we have to turn the entire container in when it's full? I was just placing an order for supplies and realized I didn't know if I needed multiple sharps containers or not...

Sharps containers are NOT resuable. Once a container is full, it needs to be securely closed and properly disposed of.

Thanks...great idea on the bottles! We don't drink soda, but we do go through lots of OJ bottles. Glad to know we don't have to buy "special" containers just for the sharps. (Yeah, since we still have them all at home, they're just in a ziploc baggies so far...)

I'm surprised you have to pay for a sharp's container. When I went to the pharmacy for my first set of dosing supplies, they handed me a free one.

I googled, and in the states you can one for free here

It looks like only your first one is free though, and I don't know if there's a 'catch'.

Here's some more info with a state-by-state guide.

For NJ: "Several options are available to safely dispose of used sharps generated in the home.
Safe Syringe Disposal Program - The New Jersey Hospital Association offers a program to safely dispose of syringes, needles and lancets. Participating hospitals offer rigid containers to dispose of these items for a small one time fee to individuals. (This program does not require needles to be clipped before placing them in the container). The container must be returned to the hospital when full for proper disposal, and will be exchanged for a new empty container at that time. Additional information about the Safe Syringe Disposal Program may be obtained by contacting:
New Jersey Hospital Association

Princeton, New Jersey 08543

Good luck!
Sarah.

sorry, I just edited my post above. you can get unlimited sharps containers for a one-time fee from the NJ hospital association.

I had to go through a MASS disposal of my cat's syringes after she left (3.5yrs worth of 3-6shots/day). Talk about depressing. I went through the state site as to how to dispose and had to uncap THOUSANDS of needles, putting them in milk and/or soda bottle containers because it said you had to have a screw lid ( I had them in coffee cans). Even MORE depressing after a loss  . I was told to put them in the garbage can after that. Unfortunately I live in a major city, where this would not be a good idea (in my eyes). I contacted hospitals and pharmacies. I had a few sharp containers, which they would accept at a fee. They would not accept the home packaged ones. Again, major city...big hospitals, well known veterinary hospital, massive amount of pharmacies to choose from....no luck. I almost tried calling a drug program which sterilizes used syringes for people. UG! Couldnt bring myself to do it.

So....I called the city. Turns out all our garbage is burned. Everything. It never mattered that I put them in containers with screw on lids, or containers at all unless I was placing them in the dumpster. They suggested I hand them to the garbage man personally, which I did. They got put in the dump truck, and smooshed with all the other trash as it went on its way to get incinerated. Not one human touched them.

Getting rid of those needles was very emotional...and the process of it. Im sure my garbage man thinks Im a major junky. Their eyes popped out of their heads when I presented myself with two LARGE garbage bags worth of needles, explained my situation about the cat, never knowing how to dispose of them, and that she was now gone.

So000...Note to others: Get rid of your used syringe/needles on a regular basis, and call your town or city to figure out the easiest way to dispose of them.

And for safety reasons, never ever recap a used needle. You don't want to stick yourself while trying to recap the needle, no matter how careful you are. Just drop the used insulin syringe right into the Sharps container. Or use a needle clipper. The cap can be thrown away with regular trash.

Some cities/towns have special household hazardous waste collection days. You can check with your city/town to see if this is offered and if medical waste such as Sharps containers will be accepted.

Another suggestion is to use empty laundry detergent bottles. Also, I also clip off the needle from the syringe before placing it in the container. You can get a syringe clipper such as this one from most pharmacies http://www.amazon.com/Safe-Insulin-Syringe-Needle-Clipper/dp/B000SAIC9S
If you use a needle clipper for the syringes, you should be able to throw the rest of the syringe in the trash.

I used a sharps container for lancets, and lancets only. You can put some crazy amount, like 1500 lancets in one sharps container. I used a needle clipper for the syringes and then just tossed the syringes in the trash.

I brought my full sharps containers to my vet. They disposed of them for me at no charge. I bought my insulin there, but not my syringes or lancets.

Be careful about clipping off the needles.

I used a needle clipper that is supposed to capture the needle into a small container
on the clipper itself.

Somehow one escaped and my husband got it in the bottom of his foot.

Thought he had a sliver and when I pulled it out it was a 5/16" insulin needle.

I called my vet to see what they wanted us to do...they said to not clip the needle off, and to recap them. (I do understand about the poking issue, though...both my husband and I have done it.) We just need to put them in any hard plastic container or can, and they'll dispose of them for us.

This has been a very informative discussion!
