Hello My 5 yo male beautiful baby has been at the vet since last Tuesday. Diagnosed now with diabetes and I am hoping to pick him up. So worried about taking care of him! This board has been extremely helpful.

Post any questions you need and let us know a little bit more details of your baby, what insulin did the vet put him on and what dose?, what he's eating? why was he at the vet and if he has some special condition, what meds his on ? Are you planing on home testing ( certainly hope so)?

Dexter went to vet because we noticed his weight loss and eating drinking a lot. I won’t know what insulin they prescribe before I consult with vet today. I have removed all dry food from home and bought Fancy Feast Pate brand wet in seafood and have some chicken on order as well. I will later be trying to get a better dry food that is recommended and feed him chicken breast occasionally.

Loosing some weight, eating and drinking a lot are actually signs of unregulated diabetes, I'm glad it appears he does not have any other issues. If you are going to be changing his diet I do recomend you start testing at home since the diet change can impact his numbers, going from a high carb diet to a low carb can lower his blood glucose a lot and you will probably have to adjust the insulin dose.

Just picked Dexter up from vet. He is on Novolin twice a day. He sure ate good when he got home

Glad he is back home and with good appetite , that's always good.

I recommend you to post any questions in the main heath forum where a lot more people will see them.

If you need help to start home testing (begining is always hard) just let us know we will try to help you
 
Welcome to the forum. The great thing about diabetes is that it is one of the most studied and well understood health conditions. It's scary to get started, but within a few weeks of blood testing and insulin dosing, a lot of people become very comfortable with the whole situation.

Little Dude was at the vet for over a week last year (from a cat fight). He barely ate anything the whole time. He is not diabetic. When he got home, he ate like a pig for a couple of days.
