Hello All!

Shadow is still sailing smoothly at the falls. She seems to just be a natural 100's kinda girl. Although the last few days, we've seen 90's and
high 80's. She is mostly sleeping in bed ( cooler nights) and has had a few occasions to get up and eat from her second bowl. I give her
a dish when we get in bed, and then just as we turn out the light, I put the second dish on the nightstand too ... in hopes that she'll get
up and eat in the night.
I need her to learn to seek the food and eat it since we will be going to my grandmother/mother's for Christmas and it's less stressful for
her to stay here. I have a teenager who will come twice a day(morning /evening) and put two (or three) bowls of food out for Shadow but will never see Shadow.
We will be gone 6 days. The alternative is to take her with us but she will have to live in a walk in closet the entire time. I would sleep
in there with her so she'd have me at night but she would be miserable in a new location and 13 plus hours each way in the car.
A few days ago , I also cleaned her smart box litter box ( the one they sell here at FDMB) and was going to put it away and realized I like
knowing if she's peeing daily. (don't want any UTI's)
I still don't ever see her drink any water at all. And I saw where Sienne told someone else that elevated Albumin is usually due to dehydration.
She had a high Albumin on her labwork, I add a couple of spoonfuls of water to some of her food but she doesn't like soup consistency so
I don't add a lot. She does like the water from the shrimp thawing out added to foods that she is less interested in.

Yesterday was our follow up to the GI dr after dd's endoscopy.
The endoscopy went well but dd was in pain when she woke up ( from them inflating her esophagus to view ) and she hurt for a couple
of days afterwards which the doctor found odd. He thought she was supersensitive.
He pressed on her abdomen which still has a tender area when he does it. She still has her random achy joints ( wrists, fingers).
He is keeping her on Prilosec until January ( when we see him next) and he ordered more tests which we went and did the lab work
immediately after the appointment.
The endoscopy showed flattened villi in her upper intestine and inflammation.
They took several vials of blood and are running genetic tests to see if she might have Celiac's and also looking for allergies to dairy and
wheat.
The dairy is possible since my mother has problems with dairy off and on during her life, and my grandmother too.
I wonder still about the timing of all this. DD had no problems at all until that wisdom teeth surgery where she got violently ill from
the oxycodone. I have found a couple of articles about trauma events affecting the villi for a period of time but then those people
recover months later and their villi go back to normal.
The symptom that bothers me most with all these things that the doctor is looking into is she doesn't have the most common symptom
which is diarrhea.
But I guess we'll have to go thru the process of eliminating the big common culprits.
They will call us if anything tests positively from the labwork.

Oh, and we gave permission for our DD to date the young man. She has been invited to dinner at his house tonight. She already met
his parents a few weeks ago but they want an evening with her.
I think shes just pleased to be finally allowed to date.... but she sees that they might not sync up with their future plans. He wants to
go to vet school in Colorado ( he can't afford Texas A&M)
He also isn't passionate about any issues although he likes to read. He may be too tepid for her. :-D
She's a big reader and very big pro-life advocate.
She is constantly told by adults of how she isn't meeting her potential ( and she does have a lot ) by becoming a sonagrapher ( ultrasound/
ct scans/ mri's). But she wants job security, a simple life, and the freedom to pursue her real interests in her own time.
She would like to work with pregnant women/ultrasounds and be a spokeperson for pro-life groups in relation to her job/expert witness
type thing.
And the future right now is better served by tradeschool type training than 4 yr degrees. And she can always go back to school if she
decides to and she 'll be able to afford it. Sonographers make good incomes and she can narrow it down later to part time.

Hi Rhiannon, Nice to see a condo, glad Shadow is doing well at the Falls and sleeping in bed. Its great that she is OTJ before your trip, that makes it easier to arrange for her stay in her familiar surroundings.
Glad your DD finally got her endo, sorry she is still having issues. I hope the genetic tests give you some answers. Hope she enjoys her dinner date with the young man, even if he may not turn out to be long term.

Hi Rhiannon,

Glad to hear Shadow is still doing well. That will make it much easier to leave her when you go on your trip.

Hope your DD feels better soon. It is odd that all this started after the dental procedure and bad drug reaction. For what it's worth, I do know several people with gastrointestinal issues that fixed the problem by removing wheat and dairy from their diet. My boss, for one, went through years of problems and medical procedures with no diagnosis. Within 2 weeks of removing wheat and dairy, all her problems were gone. I know EPID (every person is different), but it might be worth a try for a few weeks.

Great report on Shadow!

I hope you get to root of the problem for your DD. It's great you are pushing and pushing. It's pretty sad that in this day and age you have to be your own advocate and be so proactive in your own diagnosis. You very well could be on to something about the drug reaction and the timing of all this...I really hope you're able to get someone to listen. Don't give up (I know you won't!!)

I just have to laugh when you say....
I know you won't.......... ( give up).

I was going to get her some gluten free foods to try for awhile because I was reading where you can have sensitivities after an injury/ulcer
type event and then it goes back to normal after some period of time. ( each person is different)

as with all teenagers... her favorite foods are pizza, flatbread sandwiches ( subway) , and mac and cheese. and cheese.....
I have a whole foods in Santa Fe. And our store has some gluten free options too.

Guess I'll go research dairy allergies to see if it ever causes flattened villi.

There is a dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free brand of cheese called Daiya. I'm vegan (but not gluten-free) and recently started using this cheese...it's really pretty good, and they have tons of great recipes on their website! I'm addicted to "Pumpkin Alfredo Sauce", which is a healthy version of Mac-n-Cheese that is gooey and doesn't taste particularly healthy  ! I've been experimenting with it a lot lately...great for pizza, nachos, lasagna. Of course, though, I haven't had "real" cheese in over 10 years, so I don't necessarily REALLY remember what it tastes like. I also have a very good "Parmesan" recipe that uses sesame seeds, miso, nutritional yeast, and salt...I'll be happy to message it to you if you'd like!

It's good to see a Shadow and DD update. Neko was the one with the high albumin. The vet wasn't concerned about it and it wasn't way out of spec. Hopefully it doesn't mean anything for Shadow either.

I hope they can figure out how to help your DD. A good friend of mine starting having bad allergy reactions after a flu shot a couple of years ago. Flu shots are made from eggs. From there she discovered allergies to wheat, egg, and some dairy (she can still do yoghurt, butter and hard cheeses). Removing those from her diet has made a world of difference. Since we visit them for dinner a lot, DH has been experimenting with wheat flour substitutes, egg substitutes, and dairy substitutes. He's got a wheat flour substitute recipe that has turned out some very acceptable desserts! Let me know if you are interested in any of this. There are lots of gluten free pastas available.

Hi Rhiannon & Shadow,
Shadow, you are doing very nicely, and it's good that you'll be ready to spend Christmas in your own home. (I think the food training will work out well, Rhiannon. We do something similar with Rusty.)

I hope all will be OK soon with your DD. Allergies are unpredictable and not fun.

Have a great weekend,

Ella & Rusty

Hey Rhiannon, I'm so glad Shadow came back to the bed. She'll get used to the food thing, just another new habit to learn. Sorry to hear about DD but hope they find what is causing it soon! Hate thinking she is in pain and sick like that.

Jo

Hi Rhiannon and shadow, glad to hear shadow is still doing well. I am guessing too she will be happier at home, I heard cats can be more attached to their homes than their people! Not that I believe that but I understand the theory.. They are really homebodies!

Sorry to hear about your DD, hopefully things will turn around soon..

hi rhiannon! congrats on the OTJ! that makes life a lot easier, doesn't it. feeling for your daughter - i have lots of allergies, including food, and my youngest daughter (20) has been developing a lot over the past year or so. if she hasn't seen a good allergist, it would be worth the visit. natural yogurt with active cultures is good for restoring the critters that live in our guts, which helps with lactose, digestion and vitamin absorption.

you asked if the laser therapy is the same as infra-red. i'm not sure - the vet has only called it laser therapy, but the light beam is red and we have to wear special sunglasses to protect our eyes. perhaps that tells you if it's the same, i don't know.

It's good to hear that Shadow is doing so well. I'm sure she'll be happier at home during Christmas. I hope the tests help the doctors figure out what is causing your DD problems.

Hi Rhiannon,

You must really be frustrated with your daughter's doctors not being able to figure out what's going on already! I know I would be. What a drag. I sure hope they find out what's going on soon. No ideas here.

How long will you be leaving Shadow? What will you do if she still doesn't like to eat on his own? I know a lot of people leave their cats but I never do. Racci would be scared to death if I didn't come home overnight. I hope she starts eating alone and that she'll be okay.

Hugs,
Melanie & Racci

Glad to know Shadow's doing great.
Hope DD gets better soon. I am so surprised to know that many people have all different kinds of allergy. This is rare some 20 years ago, must be the enviromental effect on our health. Heard a lot of stories on how a detox program will help with allergy for youngsters, have you read up the net ?
So Rhiannon, you are pretty hold up with life aftetr the sugar dance
Yes, having Shadow stay at home will be less stressful for her but if you can get a cat sitter from a neighbourhood who is more familiar with Shadow will be a better solution.

Great Shadow report!! I hope they can pinpoint DDs issue and I hope it was a temporary situation that just has to resolve.

We have left Shadow at home at Christmas now for many years since we very rarely get to stay home and have Christmas in our own house.
My grandmother is 89 and takes care of my 68 year old mother.
They both should be in assisted living but they can't afford that so eventually they will be in a nursing home when it all falls apart ( any month
now - for the last 3 years)
So we go to be with them.
I always find an older teenager who can drive themselves over to feed our cats ( no litter box duty ) , grab the mail and text me/call me if anything looks off. But that was back in the days of dry food being left out and the teenager feeding our cats one can of food. ( shadow always ate some wet food) All those years, no one has ever seen our cats but they thought they were okay because the food was eaten and the treats left in various spots would disappear.
All for $10 /trip.

So now..... since it's only wet food , I figure I need said teenager to come over at least twice a day, morning/evening and put out several bowls
( i'm experimenting with the meatcicle to see if Shadow will eat it) .
I was going to prepare a blended "gruel" of chopped up shrimp/crab meat to be mixed in with the canned food to make it more desireable
when teenager is gone and Shadow comes out and about.
Last year, I even made a tent, on the wall side of our bed and put shadow's favorite blanket on a cat warmer where she did hang out
but could slip under the bed when teenager came in the house to feed her.
We will leave here on an afternoon, be gone for 5 full days and come home on day 6 late in the evening.

I do have some evo dry in the garage which I could keep hidden in the pantry in case Shadow ignored her canned food and the teenager could put it out in an emergency of not eating.....
but I wasn't planning on it so far.

Shadow does prefer home to traveling. I took her once to grandparents and there were all kinds of problems, not eating, constipation,
needed laser surgery when we returned on her butt because of constipation problem, she hid the entire time but did sleep in bed with me
at night.

I think she will eat some of the canned food while we are gone this year but I also think it will be sparse , hit and miss.
She always has lost a little weight when we come back. I always thought it was because she wasn't a big dry food eater...... and getting 1/2 can of friskies a day wasn't enough.
She is stressed to be alone without us and even though she knows the teenager well, she stays hidden when we aren't here.
But she is probably 10x more stressed to get in the car, ride all that way and everything is new to her and she would spend her days alone
in the closet except for me occasionally getting to peak in and she 'd have me to cuddle with at night as I would sleep in the closet with her.
They live in a tiny house now and I don't have a bedroom, I usually sleep with my grandmother and my DH sleeps on a cot in the garage. (by choice)

If I were to ever board her, I know she wouln't eat at all. She'd practically shut down, she hates cages and the vet. That wouldn never be
an option.

That's the plan so far.....

I didn't realize I omitted this earlier about DD. I thought I had mentioned this part.
They are also testing her for a bacterial infection of Giardia. I just found out that it's really common in NM if you go camping
anywhere and drink the water and once it is in your system, it's always there and can flare up.

I'm so sad that I missed Shadow's OTJ party.  So...

CONGRATULATIONS, RHIANNON & SHADOW!!!!!!

HI Rhiannon - nice condo - thanks for sharing all the updates. I feel your pain with the traveling, we just don't have a choice. But your trip is really really long. I like the idea of the gruel. Leo doesn't like the feeder and Molly is a fussy eater. I will try that with Leo, although Molly has KD so the chunks would have to be non-protien, although I could sneak that in in the interests of getting any food in at all.

The tend sounds like a nice idea. $10 is pretty good for food. Mine is $20 for food/LB/mail for 2 cats. Hmmm. I just realized I'm still paying 2-cat price with I'm taking Leo with me now. Oh well, she's good and always available so I don't want to rock the boat!

I hope they can get DD's diagnosis worked out. So much for a girl to deal with !!! It does seem suspicious that it happened after the meds. And I hope her dating the boy will improve her mood and that helps some medical problems as well.

Happy weekend!

Nice to see your update, Rhiannon. I do hope your DD gets to the bottom of what's ailing her. What a long, difficult journey it is for you all. And Shadow - what a good girl! Hopefully she will do fine on her own for a week. It must be quite a relief to have her OTJ for the holidays!

Ho Rhiannon, I didn't get a chance to reply yesterday, but I read Shadow's update and your DD. Nice report on Shadow, and sending more healing vines and prayers for your DD. I sure hope, too, they get to the bottom of things with her struggle for answers. You are a great Mom and Advocate for her. Give Shadow some scritches and look forward to updates.

Thank you for all the good wishes for DD and the continued happiness for Shadow's otj....

If she's ever going to revert, at least let me always get her back to otj in time for Christmas travels.

That's a rough situation with the traveling, Rhiannon. I wish you were close so I could help you. I don't have anyone either but Racci does well once we get where we're going when traveling. It's the actual traveling by car that she hates but is fine with the rest of it.

When I had my neighbor/friend come over to check them, I also had a vet tech come twice a day to give Racci's meds, food and clean litter for $20 per day (2 trips)! Have you tried checking your vet techs? It seems its the same price (or was) for a lot more, at least it was in CA a few years ago. They would know what to do if something was wrong also. If you haven't tried it, it might be worth looking into.

I guess since she's done it before, she won't be too worried and the tent and fish mixture sound like good ideas. Does she really like fish a lot? If you're not sure, don't put the fish stew inside the tent. This way she won't avoid the tent because of the fish. It would be great if you could get the tent up and encourage the cats to sleep in it a couple of weeks before you leave. Then the girl would know where to find them and might be able to get a peek to make sure that everything is alright.

I hope it all turns out alright and everyone does well with the trip.

Hugs,
Melanie & Racci

its a shrimp/crab mixture.... no fish ... and shadow loves shrimp and crab. it was putting shrimp in her am/pm foods that allowed me to give her those shots.
if dd's friend found trouble, she would call me and we would head home immediately. ( but it takes 14 hrs driving time. )
This teenager has an extreme sense of responsibility/obigation ... I'm not worried about her showing up or doing whatever I ask.
I just never ask anyone to deal with a litter box. 6 days is only 6 times as a general rule for shadow.
And other than being alone, I think Shadow is only stressed out when someone comes in the house to feed her. Her toys move around,
she eats the treats, I think she pretty much stays near the bedroom so she can scamper under the bed when someone enters.

It's just in the old days, there was always dry out if she wanted it and now there won't be. There will be canned sitting in the bowls
with some water to keep it fresher longer and I'm hoping with the crab /shrimp mixed in with it, she will seek it out and eat.
I could have the teenager leave some purebites turkey chunks in a bowl too. (close enough substitute for dry )

All of this is why I wanted to get Shadow OTJ by Christmas. She would have had to travel with us if she were getting shots.

I think this is the least stressful option.
traveling is stressful.
boarding is extremely stressful.
being alone at home isn't ideal but if she could speak, she would prefer it to the other two.
She's always so happy when we return.... she just has to come look at us to make sure it's us and not whoever has been feeding her. ;-)
