Well, last night was fun. What if I hadn't checked him? I haven't been routinely checking BGs after PMPS- I did last night just because I was thinking of increasing his dose today...

Decreased his dose to 2.75 today. Things were looking pretty good until my +10 of 656. We'll see where he goes. I'll be sure to hold the 2.75 for a number of days =)

I have a question about food. I know there are some low carb and some higher carb. The higher carb shouldn't be fed. I switched him from prescription dry to prescription canned then to wellness canned. He's doing fine on it, but I'm wondering if it's ok to feed Fancy Feast- classics. I know in terms of carb % it's ok, but is it an ok food?

I have most of my experience with dog food. There are many ( I can probably include myself in this group) who are very picky about what they feed their dogs. Not all foods are treated equally! The reason I'm questioning is because as a rescue group we have spent over $1100 in Shadow in the 5-6 weeks he's been with us. We will continue to treat and do what he needs, but if we can save some $$ it would be helpful.

Thanks for your advice. Also, thank you to everyone who helped me out last night. It was comforting knowing that there were people there if I ran into trouble.

Wasn't it fun? What would have happened if you hadn't checked him? He might have been ok, he might have had hypo symptoms .. We will never know.. The point was that you did check him and he was fine because you treated it.

I would hold this new dose for at least three days unless he drops low again! Here is a protocol we use..http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1581

Food.. I used to feed prescription and high quality foods to Tiggy all his life. Good quality foods only. And he got cancer anyway. I am told fancy feast isn't the best quality food because of the cuts of meat they use but since Tiggy got cancer on good food then who knows.. I feed him fancy feast now because its low carb and well priced. and I reckon since they would eat mice in the wild, they would eat pretty much everything on the mouse, not the best quality cuts only. So I save my money for treatments.

My budget is tight also. I have three cats and they get Friskies pates and Fancy Feast classic pates. Yes, the Friskies has some rice in it but it is very little to keep the carb percentages as low as they are, 8-10%.

Wink my diet controlled diabetic gets more of the Fancy Feast pates mixed with the Friskies, about 1/2 can FF to 1/2 can of Friskies. Its meat based protein, not plant based so that is better for a cat. Yes, more by-products than some of the other higher quality foods like Wellness but I still believe the Fancy Feast and Friskies are better than any dry food out there, and at an affordable price.

This vet explains it much better than I can: http://www.catinfo.org/

When you get a test like that +10 of 656 that does not seem to fit in with the numbers you are getting for the day, I would recommend using another strip and get a second test.

We have some money saving ideas. Where is the most money going now? We might be able to help you save money in other areas besides the food.

Thanks ladies!

Deb, I did recheck- used a different meter. On my first meter I got HI- the second check with a different meter was the 656.

I think most of our money right now is going to vet visits/testing. The vet did convince the rescue coordinator to buy an alpha track.... I recently got the Relinon at Walmart and also got a donated meter =) I think this will help with costs.

Hopefully we'll just have some maintenance costs from here on out. We had bottles of lantus donated ( we are very lucky and thankful for that) I also got syringes/lancets donated. So I guess now it's just the basics...

Thanks

The 656 could be a bounce. He could be more sensitive after the low last night. He should come down soon though but remember to test for ketones when you see this.

The test strips on the Alphatrak are just so expensive. The shelter that I am fostering Wink for, gave me an Alphatrak and then wanted me to skimp on the testing. I bought a Relion Confirm and started to test more often for my peace of mind. I can do 3 tests on the Confirm for the cost of one Alphatrak strip.

Which Relion did you get? With Wink OTJ, I'm not going through those test strips very fast and I stocked up just before he went OTJ.

I also bought a Relion Prime meter. With that one, I can do 5 tests for the cost of 1 Alphatrak strip.

From this point, you can do the curves yourself. By doing that, and the daily testing, you have more accurate, real-time data on what is going on with the BG numbers. I would not have another Fructosamine test done at the vet, simply share your spreadsheet with the vet.

Ask around with friends, co-workers, other rescue groups, people at church, etc to see if there are any useful diabetic supplies like the 3/10 cc syringes with 1/2 unit markings or more lancets that you could use if you can find someone to donate supplies. Be specific on what you want since those 1cc syringes with 2u markings are not very useful for dosing the small doses we use with a cat.

Are there any other upcoming vet expenses? Or Visits?
