Help Just tested Shadow 3 Times.

+4.5 63
+4.5 32

Just fed her 1/2 teaspoon of Gravy NOW what. Will test again...how long do i wait
She is not showing any symptoms of LOW numbers

waited 10 minutes she is up to 73

I'd test again in 20 minutes. If Shadow is still below 40 then, I'd add a drop of karo to a tsp of gravy.

My Neko has only been in the 30's a few times and the only symptom was being hungry.

I would give her a bit more gravy maybe another 1/2 teaspoon. I would test again in 20-30 minutes after you gave the gravy the first time. do you have Karo. I would add Karo if she isn't coming up. Maybe 3 or 4 drops to a teaspoon of food.

Hi Wendy & Neko! So happy to hear from you both :) I couldn't wait any longer! I just tested and she is at 73. Slight breathe! Will test again in 20 minutes. What a bad feeling, being this low for the first time! YIKES

Hi! Happy to have another friend here too! She started to come up I just tested her she read 73... ICKy feeling! Hope this passes soon :razz:

yes, that is a scary feeling. You did great. the gravy does wear off so it is good to keep checking.

Whew! Glad she came up. Try giving her a tsp or two of low carb food. You can wait 30 minutes for the next test. The gravy will wear off so it's good to keep testing for a bit.

And congratulations on the .25U reduction. :-D

You can take the 911 off now, as you have eyes on your condo.

Thanks for the help!! Will take the 911 off, hopefully won't need again anytime soon :smile: What do you mean by the .25U reduction?

Since Shadow went below 50 on the 1.25 dose. It means that the correct insulin dose needs to be reduced by .25. You want numbers above 50 and above to be in a safe range. So you will give her 1 unit next shot.

By going below 50, Shadow has earned a deduction to 1U. Could you keep updating your subject line with the current tests so we know Shadow is currently out of danger.

Catherine, cats that nadir late can nadir earlier when looking for a reduction. Neko is the same, but not always. :lol:

So, since she cleared her bounce, that means she still requires a .25 reduction?

Yes, a drop below 50 is a reduction and she dropped well below 50. You should go to 1 unit next shot.

I would check her again in about an hour to make sure she stays up or surfing. Did you feed her LC food a little while ago? It takes awhile in the beginning to regulate the blood sugar levels. It does get easier as you go.

Yes I gave her 1 Teaspoon of the gravy & 2/3 Fancy Feast I just tested her she is at 123

I see you are keeping good notes on the SS about when and what you fed. That's great. Next time Shadow goes low, you'll have an idea of what works. You want to get an idea of how carb sensitive Shadow is. Some people only need to feed MC or higher car% LC (8-9%) to bring their cat up, but it's good to start with high carb the first time, and especially if the kitty is in the 30's. For Neko, I have to use high carb all the time.

Unless Shadow normally gets any more food in a cycle, I'd not feed her any more tonight. Once you've had two rising tests in a row, without the influence of food, you are probably OK for the night. I like to do a test at least 2 hours after I give high carb food as that's how long that food lasts in my cat. Sometimes the numbers will go back down again as the HC wears off.

For future reference, once Shadow is out of low numbers (above 50) you can switch from high carb to low carb.

Great job tonight. The first lows are always a bit scary. nailbite_smile
