So I'm trying to figure out the order of doing things. Will try to take first BG reading tonight. I want to give him treats because he's really feisty. So should I BG test, then give a treat, then feed meal and then give insulin?? Once I see his level how do I know how much insulin to give? He was prescribed 2 units of Lantus. And if you give treats and test more than just before feedings, do you give treats every single time? If you test four or five times, does your kitty get treats each time? Tell me your order of things. Thanks.

The order that I use for Autumn is...Treat, Test, Treat, Feed, Insulin in fact she gets her insulin while her face is buried in her food. When you are first starting out, anything under 200 we don't like you shooting any insulin.

Plus 2u of Lantus as a starting dose is a little too high, we would much rather see you start out at 1u until you see how your cat is going to respond to it.

Thanks. I wanted to test him while he's eating. Vet said I would just need to make sure he eats because if he didn't then that would be a problem. I think that would work better for us. Where do you give the shots? In the scruff.

Well it truly depends on which cat. With Autumn the only place she will allow is in her scruff, she gets very cranky anywhere else..however with the other little girl that I had she hated the scruff so I would give her shots in her side/flank. And when I was giving shots to my big guy before he went off insulin it varied because he could have cared less as long as I was feeding him at the time. Regardless of where you shoot you want to move the spot around some to prevent scar tissue from building up.

remember not to feed for two hours before you shoot. it can inflate the numbers and you dont want to shoot when she is low

Here's some quick little tips that Marje & Mike and Gracie put together, with Tobey's supervision, I'm sure! I learned something from it even after I'd been doing this for a couple months! It has a nice pic of places where you can shoot your cat. There is a theory out there that says there's not enough blood flow in the scruff to allow for proper absorbtion. I think that's all really up to the cat - every cat is different (ECID). Hang in there with the testing - you will get it!

Treatwise, I think of it almost like training a cat as you would any other animal. At first you start out giving a ton of treats as you try to coerce and re-enforce the behavior you desire. Then you start giving less treats the more they "get it" and the faster they respond. Eventually, you only have to give a treat or two in reward instead of as instruction. So, don't hesitate to give him that treat!

Btw, not sure what treats you're giving him but a lot of cats (including my own) love the freeze-dried meats and seafood treats, plus they're low carb! I can't find the link to the treats list right now for some reason, but if you haven't seen it yet, someone else will probably come along with it before I find it.

P.S. You can also use treats to distract the cat to give you time while testing. I've used this quite a bit, especially if I have to re-insert the strip or reset the meter or change out the lancets.

ETA: Told ya someone would beat me to it. ;-)
