Selecting a Glucose Meter

Hi! I feel certain this has been asked a hundred times, but I have had trouble finding an answer on this site.

I have a freestyle lite meter that I was given by a family member. It's done a good job and I have no complaints, but now I've run out of the test strips I was given and it's time to buy some. Holy moly! Freestyle Lite is not a popular meter and strips are really expensive. 100 count is $73 at Walmart. It looks like Relion Confirm is $36 for 100.

So- my question is. What do you use and how much does it cost? A big consideration is also how much blood it requires because my girl is a small black kitty who is difficult to prick because of her tiny solid black ears. Thanks!

The Relion Confirm and Micro take the same amount of blood as the Free Style Lite. The Relion Prime is a little cheaper but requires almost twice the blood drop size. A large majority of US members use the Relion meters.

I don't have a cost since I am in Canada and cannot get the Relion meters here, but someone will be along and let you know the costs. They are very affordable and readily available at Walmart when you need them.

In store Walmart prices should be the same nationally, $35.88 for 100ct but like Paul said, you can find the ReliOn confirm/micro test strips for less online :). I find them for almost $10 less per 100ct box.

Thank you all! Looks like we will be switching to a ReliOn confirm/micro. I will just go on and buy it all at Walmart in store and look for cheaper strips online in the future.

I used the Micro and mostly bought my strips on line. Just make sure to check the expiration dates before purchasing.

Does anyone have experience with the OneTouch? My niece (who is herself diabetic) and a friend (who had a sugar baby that died a couple of years ago) each gave me their OneTouch glucose meters.

Thoughts on that meter would be greatly appreciated.

Also, where do I find a conversion chart for adjusting the numbers for a human glucose meter to proper numbers for a cat? I've been poking around the boards and can't find anything to tell me how to convert the info.

tyk

There is no conversion chart between human meters and pet meters. Generally speaking, the two meters vary greater at higher numbers and less at lower numbers.

So how do you know what the right numbers are for a cat when using a human meter?

Normal numbers for cats on a human meter are 50-120.....on a pet meter they are 68-about 150...so as you see, they are quite close at lower numbers.

The important thing to know is your "time to act" number.....Under 50 on a human meter is your "time to act" by feeding something high carb or giving a few drops of Karo/honey/syrup to bring them up above 50

Does anyone have experience with the OneTouch?
I used to use the OneTouch Ultra and Mini. Both used the same strips. The strips required 1 uL of blood which is high compared to one now that use 0.6 or 0,3 uL. I found no problem with getting enough blood for the OneTouch. I really liked the OneTouch and it seemed to be accurate. I only changed bwcause the OneTouch strips got too expensive.
