mr b has started in with his seasonal sniffling, congestion, sneezing. We used to get chlorpheniramine in flavored chews from a past vet, but i dont know the ingredients and now that he's diabetic i dont know if that would be a problem. I have had zero success pilling him with that medication in tablet form (chlor trimeton?) my understanding is it is extremely bitter. I've also heard it can be dehyrdrating, which is the last thing we want in a diabetic cat having hydration issues already.

We've got liver inflammation so there's that to consider.

Should i try zyrtec? Claritin? Something else? Are some to be taken short term only? During a bad spell last spring/summer he was taking chlorpheniramine every day for weeks.

Is l-lysine a good option?

One vet recommended saline spray up his nose. Haha yeah right how could anyone manage administering that!? Hilarious.

I medicate my cats with the meds in a gel cap. That way they do not taste bitter meds. I also use a pill gun.
I would try zyrtec or Claritin if you vet agrees.
I would also try L-Lysine. I administer that to all of my cats.

Some pharmacies will sell plain gelatin capsules. They are available online, too - try Amazon.
Check with the vet - rather than saline up the nose, try preservative free eye drops such as Systane in the individual packets, not the vial. The eyes drain into the sinuses and may help flush out congestion. The drops do not sting (I use them myself).
You could crush the chlorpheniramine and place it in a pill pocket or wrap in soft cheese. Discuss the dose with the vet.

My Patches,Callie's brother, had a lot of problems with allergies. Our vet gave him Chlorpheniramine tabs, 4mg. I was to give him 1/2 a tab. I found that if I coated it in butter, it went right down. I have done this for pilling both cats and dogs for years with very few problems. Sometimes, with a resistant cat, I needed someone to hold them while I dropped in the pill.

About the eye drops = you mean actually administer eye drops onto the cats eyes? I'm just trying to figure out how to do that. Thanks!

I have trouble giving my non-sugar cat pills. Please tell me about this pill gun & how it works!
thanks!!

I agree with Larry - Murphy also has seasonal allergies - he gets 1/2 tab zyrtec once a day starting on Mothers Day and ending on the 1st snow - I put it in a gel cap (I think #4) size - note that my vet has also started him on a new drug called apoquel - its really for cutaneous allergies but they wanted to see how it worked for seasonal allergies as well - and the verdict is that is has worked extremely well I give 1/2 tab daily
I have had lousy luck with the pill gun - I put the pill in the back of this throat then follow with 3 ml of water
