Hello LL!

I wanted to get some feedback with your personal experiences with shooting the scruff vs the flank and what that does to your BG's!

From what I am reading on the sticky dated in 2004, it states that scruff shooting will give you slow absorption therefore later onset, later peak and longer lasting where as flank shooting gives you fast absorption faster onset and earlier peak.

My kitty has overlap days, very high BG days and the very same day...very low BG and I'm wondering if there is a correlation with how I'm shooting.

Thank you!

Hi, I have not done enough research or reading of research to contribute an exact answer. My memory is fuzzy.. but I am under the train of thought that scruff is not best.. but that could be on faulty data I have chosen to absorb. I think the flank, side of the belly & chest are excellent areas to shoot. I alter both sides of the body & shoot the side of the chest & stomach. Many shoot the scruff & get splendid results.. it just depends on the cat, insulin, diet, moon, sun, etc  nah.. not so much.. it just seems that some have better luck & others not so much.. with no rhyme or reason & very little to do with where kitty receives an injection.

I shot in the scruff for a long time, and eventually J.D. built up some tough skin in that area. I now shoot in the flanks.

Some Housekeeping: I see this is the second? condo you opened today.
We try to keep everyone to one condo per day. So if you want to ask a question, you just go to your condo that you already opened for the day, and edit the subject line in your first post to add the word "Question" so people can see you have a question, and then reply in your first condo with what the question is, and people will see it and give you the answers there.
If there are two condos for one person, things get mixed up and it becomes hard to follow, sometimes.

There are a number of locations where you can shoot. I shoot in the scruff. If the absorption is slower, that's fine with me. I've tried shooting in the flank. I found it awkward and ended up giving fur shots.

I shoot between the shoulder blades, too. When Champ hunkers down to eat, there's excess skin to pull up on there, but none in the flanks. I don't think it matters if you want to do it in the scruff. The only negative I've heard is that the cat can develop scar tissue, like Dyana's J.D., and it makes it harder to shoot in that area. If you vary the location of the shot in the scruff, you shouldn't have that problem.

the BEST place to shoot is wherever the cat lets you!
seriously, i tried a flank shot and nearly lost my fingers. we shoot in the scruff/shoulder blade area. rotating the injection spot is the key.

I shoot in scruff and chest so I can rotate and I have it annotated on Gracie's SS so I could see if there is any correlation in numbers vs where I shoot. Mornings are always left side and evenings right. First day is left center scruff (lcs), night is right center scruff (rcs); next day is left outer scruff (los), night is right outer scruff (ros); third day is left chest (lc) and night is right chest (rc). I haven't been able to tell any difference in absorption rate at all so now I just rotate to keep her from building up scar tissue. I never have tried flank and after others talking about their not so great experiences with it, I don't want to

I shoot the flank, with Willie sitting in my lap while we shoot. But Willie is also very mild mannered, without claws or most of his teeth... much easier under those conditions!!
