I am writing this note to perhaps help others with their cats in a similar situation. To start my sweet Scout (14 yr old female calico) was diagnosed with diabetes in Feb 2010 (@10.5 yrs old) She most likely had it earlier as we saw her drinking water from the floor of the shower frequently and thought it was just cute. In February 2010 we took her to the vet for a checkup and they checked her BGL and it was 295. So they started us on Prozinc, and gave us Purina diabetic dry food. Not being satisfied I hit the internet and found this site and others. I also found a feline specialist here in So. California and we took Scout to see her.

First thing was getting her off dry food and only canned Wellness food. We adjusted her insulin until we got her into remission 6 weeks later! Well, that was short lived, in Aug. 2010 she was acting weird again and sure enough her BG was 280. We tried to regulate by bumping up to 4 units twice per day but could not get her lower than 191. The vet suggested we try Lantis, we also did an ultrasound and a ton of blood work. Her BG seem to run 295-150 but we could not get it lower. She trucked along with these numbers during 2011, getting two shots of Lantis each day.

In late 2011 she was losing weight, vomiting, and had high BG. We took her to the vet and her BG was 400, she was placed on IV fluids for 3 days, now we were also dealing with compromised kidneys, and pancreatitis. She could not use her back legs, and we had to hold her so she could urinate. I read about B12 on this site and tried it, within a couple days she could walk again!!! She seemed to bounce back and we kept her on Lantis, 2 units every 12 hours + fast acting insulin (1 unit) twice per day (I came home for lunch everyday to give her the fast acting and woke up at midnight for the other shot) We had her numbers in the 80-150 range! We also had to start SubQ therapy in Jan- 2012, 150ml every day spiked with potassium, and B12. So the vet suggested taking off the fast acting and only going with lantis. She trucked along without ever getting good BG regulation, it seems the pancreatitis just keep throwing the BG out of wack and they we also had the kidneys to deal with.

There were good days and bad days throughout 2012. In Nov. 2012 she crashed and needed to go back to the vet for three days on i/v for 3 days, but she did not have quite the bounce back we were used to seeing in the past.. We also started on another insulin, levimir. We were going with 2 units twice per day. Her BG numbers were in the mid 150s. Her blood work numbers were not great but quality of life was good, Vet said we are on borrowed time, but if quality of life is good, keep going. In Feb 2013, she crashed again, on i/v fluids for 3 days, did not get a great bounce back, BG still not regulated well. In May 2013 she crashed again, lost one pound in weight, 12 to 11 lbs. On three more days of I/V, she came home, there was a little improvement but she stayed in the closet for 5 days which concerned me as she is always social. Then, a week later she started coming around. She has not looked great but quality of life is still okay.

Over the past couple week she has looked dehydrated, and the last couple days she has been walking around and wobbling a bit. Yesterday afternoon she actually stumbled over, I think she may have been hypoglycemic. We gave her food and a tiny bit of honey. She is going to the vet today, most likely to go on I/v. She has lost a little more than ½ a pound in the past 3-4 wks, she is looking thin and we are taking her back to the vet today. I am growing concerned as the time between crashes in getting shorter.

It has been a 3 1/2 year journey with diabetes, pancreatitis, and renal failure, Scout has been a trooper the entire time of getting poked with needles all the time and sub-Q fluids daily for the past 18 months! It’s also been very expensive but she is family. She will be 14 yrs old at the end of this week. I hope she can find the strength to make it! I know we have been on borrowed time for at least the past year, I just hope I will know when the right time is to let her go and not prolong the pain.

To others out there, don’t give up, I have truly treasured the past 3.5 years I have had with Scout since diagnosed with diabetes and we have a bond that few will experience.

Have you read the information on Tanya's CRF site about when it may be time for CRF kitties to be eased to the Rainbow Bridge?

Thanks, I have read the section multiple times over the past couple years. My wife is on her way to the vet with Scout, we will wait to see what the vet says. This is not fun at all!

Re: Scout's journey with Diabetes, Pancreatitis, and CRF

Thanks for sharing your story. Scout has had wonderful care from her "beans" and she knows it. You have done more than most and should take comfort in that. I pray that she rallies once again and gives you another 3 years! One never knows what they are capable of! Hugs to you both. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: Scout's journey with Diabetes, Pancreatitis, and CRF

We are going to try IV therapy one last time. The vet is bringing Scout home with her so she can get 6-7 hours today. We decideded we would drop her off in the morning and pick her up at night so she can be at home with us at night, also they don't run the IV at night, so why have her sit in a cage. She is getting near the end but is still eating and comes to people for attention. We got 6 wks from the IV therapy last time on May 9th, I am not sure she will respond well this time, the vet agreed. I figured I would try it hoping it will give her a little more quality time with us. I am not fooling myself, my wife and I know this will be a day to day situation. As the time periods between crashes are getting shorter and shorter I don't believe we will put her through another IV session after this. My vet told us we have done everything we could do, at least she will see her 14th birthday and with a little luck some good days after that too.

Here is a photo of her relaxing in the backyard last Sunday.

Re: Scout's journey w/Diabetes, Pancreatitis, & CFR:Ended 6-

It's with a broken heart I write this just having to help my little princess pass about two hours ago approximately 2:15 PST. I was in a meeting at work and got back to my office at 10:40, I got a call from the vet and the doctor needed to speak to me. Scout had what they think was a stroke, she had difficulty breathing and a irregular heart Rhythm. The vet gave her chest compressions and stabilized her but she was not breathing well and her tongue was half out of her mouth, they could not confirm a stroke with out a mri but she had a brain/heart episode that was sever. She told me she thought she was going to pass at that time and told us to get down there. i left work and called my wife and she met me there. The blood panel showed her BUN was 100+, and her other numbers were off the chart and worse than ever. When we saw her in the room she was still on IV and wrapped in her favorite blanket. She had also not been able to get up to use the sand box and was a bit wet, poor girl.

We debated whether to take her home to and bring here back the next day to help her pass but vet was very concerned about here ability to make it through the night and clearly the IV was not helping and the day we dreaded for 3 1/2 years had arrived.

We stayed I the room with here for 2+ hours holding, petting, and telling scout how much we enjoyed our 13 years 11months and two weeks with her. She was really in bad shape and had lost more weight since Sunday. She truly enjoyed my wife and I being there with her and smiled at us (eyes) and gave me several kisses on my face (licks). She just looked at us with her beautify green/amber eyes and slowly blinked at us while we were talking to her and petting her. Here left side of her mouth was drooping a little, I think this was a stoke finally after all the high BG, and host of other problems she had to endure.

We had the vet prepare a sedative for her and after about 5-7 minutes they gave her the injection in the IV line that helped her cross over. There was no drama, I held her head in my hands and kept my face 2" from her face, we had eye contact the entire time as I told her how much she meant to us and how much we would miss her. After a few moments she crossed over with each of us face to face looking each other in the eyes. We cried and stayed with her for another 30 minutes. We made arrangements for a private cremation where we will get a final viewing and be able to witness the cremation and bring her home with us. That was scheduled for thurs @10am. The will take an imprint of her paw and a small clipping of her fur so we can put it in the beautiful Cedar and brass box. I feel like my heart has been torn out! Even with all this pain I just think back to all of the wonderful memories since July 12 1999 and I smile. She gave me so much and when she needed us 3 1/2 years ago we spared no expense of our time and money to help our little baby feel better. I knew we were on borrowed time, she was a fighter and I don't give up. My wife and I do not have children other than our cats so this is hitting us very hard. I am worried about poor Cody our(8 yr old orange tabby) who worshiped scout. He alway sat next to her for her daily subQ treatments and was the first to welcome her home from her many, many trips to the vet. we came home and he knows something is wrong, he has been crying out for scout and looking for her all over the house. This will be very hard on him also. I am so glad my wife and I cancelled our plans during the past two weekends and stay home all day with scout, she has been an indoor cat but for some strange reason the last two weekends she wanted to be in the backyard with my wife and I and she laid on the patio with us and ate BBQ, chased bugs, and enjoyed the sun and wind. You would have never guessed that on Sat and Sun that would be her last weekend with us.

I have lost 3 other cats in my life but she was truly her daddy's little girl, she loved my wife also but she slept on my chest every night and would come to me before anyone else. I lost a big piece of my life today around 2:15 PST, life will go on but I will never have a special bond like the one I had with my sweet calico cat named Scout.

"anima" in Latin means soul. You have a friend now scouting out the terrain for you. I appreciate everything you said about the bond you formed with Scout since 2010.

Such a beautiful girl !!

May blessings of peace and comfort surround you in your time of sorrow. Her parting was filled with love beyond measure and I know she knows that.

I believe with all my being that God calls everyone one of HIS creatures home, and her walk across Rainbow Bridge was filled with sunbeams and treats. She will be in fields of catnip, and pouncing her to heart's content.

Re: Scout's journey w/Diabetes, Pancreatitis, & CFR:Ended 6-

I am deeply sorry for your loss. Peace to you and your family in this tragic and heartbreaking time.

I am very sorry. Fly free sweet Scout, you are much loved and will be sorely missed.

Be sure to talk with Cody and explain to him what happened. He will understand, he too will need to mourn her loss, but he will understand.

Re: Scout's journey w/Diabetes, Pancreatitis, & CFR:Ended 6-

Thank you to all of you so much for the support!! I really makes us feel good. It's been a really hard day at work for me. Tomorrow is our private viewing and creamation for Scout, they have been very nice to us and are letting us bring Cody with us so he can see Scout and have closure too. The long sleeve dress shirt I was wearing yesterday had Scout's scent on it. I had it on the floor of our bedroom and Cody went to it and smelled Scout and began crying out and he laid on my shirt rubbing his face on it so

Tomorrow will be a hard day, at least we get to bring scout home with us!

Again, thank you for all of your support, it's very much appreciated!! More photos to follow I promise.

Again to others out there newly diagnosed, don't give up! Scout was in bad shape but we gave her 3 1/2 years of high quality life. I am so thankful we had the finacial ability to do whatever it took to ensure she had the best medical care, home health care (My wife and I), and the love to carry on. If anybody has questions about what we went through I would be more than happy to share any advice our experiences that may help you and your sick kitty. Best advise is don't give up, those furry little cridders are fighters!
