Scout has a fever, possible kidney infection

Background: Scout is a healthy 9 year old cat with diet controlled diabetes. So a week ago Scout came with me to Florida. She handled the trip well except she barely ate and didn't poop while she was there. I started putting 1/4 tsp of Miralax in her food 1x day but nothing, so when we got home I took her to the vet. Vet gave her an enema, which worked, but she hasn't pooped since then and still seems "off" to me... so back to the vet we went this morning. Vet says her intestines feel better and to continue with the laxative. I asked if she could give her a full exam anyway... and guess what? Scout had a temp of 103 and her kidneys were tender to the touch. Vet put her on Clavamox bid and said if she doesn't perk up by Monday to bring her back in.

Anything I should worry about given her diabetes? I'm expecting higher than normal numbers until the infection clears. Anything else I should ask the vet about or check on?

Also is 1/4 tsp Miralax a good dose or can I go higher? My vet recommended 1 tsp of Metamucil but I don't have Metamucil in the house. Not sure if Miralax is stronger, if not I could probably go with 1 tsp.

I use Miralax. I dose 2x daily. Mixed with water. Miralax doesn't have sugar in it. I don't know about Metamucil. The Clarmox might give her diaheria so go easy in the Miralax. She could become dehydrated. Miralax takes water from the body so that's why it's important to add water to it & her food.

Thanks Jenn! I mix lots of warm water in her food to encourage her to eat so I think she gets plenty of water, as long as she's eating. She's been eating only about 2 oz of actual food a day, except yesterday, when she polished off most of a 5 oz can.

I'm still worried. She really wasn't right when I got home tonight. She was asleep on a blanket on the couch and she never sleeps on the couch unless I am there and she wants to cuddle. Then I put food down for her and she didn't even lift her head. I came over and gave her a cuddle and her Clavamox and she got up to get her treat. (Despite being dumber than a sack of hammers, she knows that whenever she gets pilled or poked she gets a treat after.) I hope she feels better tomorrow. I'll be out all day unfortunately, I'm leading a rock climbing expedition, but I will try not to worry too much.

Poor Scout!! Im so sorry, hope she feels better soon! Curt still has the runs.... we have opposite problems it seems... :/
 
Lori - I know I sound like a broken record sometimes, but do keep an eye on ketones. With the infection, it can contribute to higher levels.

Hope Scout is feeling more like herself soon!
 
Update: Scout seems to be feeling a little better today. Unfortunately, yesterday I only got one Clavamox in her because she was hiding in the morning. (Not sure if she was hiding because she was not feeling well or because she was trying to avoid being pilled or taken back to the vet.) Today she's not hiding at all. She's been sleeping a lot, somewhat lethargic, but whenever I head to the kitchen she comes with to see if there's food to be had. She turned her nose up at breakfast but I think its just that particular flavor she doesn't like; I put some Purina DM down for lunch and dinner and she's eaten half the can, plus she ate some chicken as a treat. Ketones are negative and BG is normal, thank goodness.

I spoke too soon... poor little girl spent a day puking. I think it was the Clavamox as that happened to Nipper once. I went back to the vet and they sent me home with a different antibiotic that is a liquid. Apparently it tastes disgusting but there's been no more puking and Scout is getting her appetite back!

It is possible to get some meds in a subcutaneous injectable format. If you feel comfortable with that, check with the vet. That may reduce GI upsets.
