Scotch is nueyered male. About 23 lbs. Has been in remission 3 times in 3 years. This last few months no luck. I do home testing. On prozinc. Started at 2u & was up to 12u. Blood sugars in 400. Went back to 8u because it made no difference in BS. A few weeks ago under 200 for a couple days. Now back in the 400's. Always is starving it seems. Is fed friskee pate. I'm very discouraged. The insulin is a fortune & try to manage myself with calls to the vet. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm sick about thinking that i may have to give up.

Hi Scotch's Mom, I'm not a prozinc user but there are many experienced members here for sure. Some of them will eventually reply to help you. But they will need you to create a spreadsheet such as what you can see linked to in my signature below this post. There are instructions near the end of the sticky post for beginners of prozinc. I'd suggest you read it and set one up. If you have trouble getting yours to work correctly or viewable by others, just ask for that help too.

Here's link to that sticky post: (actually spreadsheet help nearer to the middle)

Do you have any BG values to share starting with the 2 units continuing to how you got up to 12 units. Also, the BG values for:
"A few weeks ago under 200 for a couple days. Now back in the 400's. Always is starving it seems. "
Really need BGs before shots and in between.

As minimum I would try changing to Lantus or Levemir since those work differently that ProZinc.

Further, does Scotch have any other health problems like an infection or dental problem that is causing the problem.

Hello--

So sorry to hear you are in such a frustrating place right now. I also wonder if there might be some additional health problem underlying the recent bad numbers-- has Scotch been to the vet recently to be fully checked out?

I'm afraid I also don't have experience with Prozinc, but 8-12U sounds like a fairly high dose to me. As others say, any information you can share about how you got to that dose and what the BG numbers have looked like in the last few months would be really helpful. The spreadsheet is a great tool for that, but even a more-detailed outline of what you describe above would help in the meantime, just so that people can start to get an idea of what is going on with Scotch and start to form plans to try to get him feeling better.

Don't give up hope!

Maybe try posting this in the prozinc forum as well. You will get more eyes on your thread and a lot more help.:bighug:

It might be worth asking on the Lantus and Levemir board whether switching to a different insulin might help. Here's a link to the board:

Re cost of Lantus, many US members buy it much cheaper from Marks Marine Pharmacy in Canada:

Also, there's a Supply Closet here at FDMB where there are often cheap/free supplies:
