scooting

Our civvie twix has recently taken to scooting her butt on the floor. We switched foods on her a few months back and I'm wondering if this is associated with the food change. Once she had diarrhea but not extreme diarrhea, just softer then normal. Now she is having regular poops on a regular basis and tends to scoot at least once or twice a week. We have checked her the best we can in her general behind area and don't see much of anything going on. She went to the vets about a month or so ago and pooped in the carrier so they did a fecal exam on it, and said it was negative. I just didn't know if there was something more we could do for her?

The only thing I can tell you is that when my cats did that, we went to the vet and they were treated for worms (from fleas). Fortunately, flea prevention is easy so I haven't had to make that trip in years.

Shadoe's been known to scoot, and after having her glands expressed, she was fine.
Something must not feel quite right or you would not see the scooting.

if she is an indoor only cat is it possible for her to get worms for the first time in 6 years? Wouldn't they have shown up in her fecal examination last month? Peter thinks it is because she had runnier poop then normal a few weeks back and there is just a bit of dried poop around her behind but she can't quite clean it due to her size. She is NOT a cat that we can manhandle to clean her up either. I do not know how to check anal glands? But this is the type of cat that HATES to be picked up or touched in any way.

The vet would be the one to check the anal glands and express them if needed. Just beware that anal glands can get infected and rupture and then she would definitely need treatment. Maybe it is just a "klingon" that she is trying to get off herself.

there is an in home debate going on about twix. Peter thinks it is her just trying to get the dry poop off around her behind area. Not an allergic reaction to her food, not worms and not her anal glands. I think it is an allergic reaction to her food, making her behind itch. I really do not believe she has worms. I mean it is a possibility but we have never ever had any flea issues or any worm issues in the past, not even when they were kittens and first checked at the vets. Plus we just had the fecal exam done and I know it's possible they weren't showing up on the exam but I haven't seen anything funky going on around her behind area or her LB. I researched online about blocked anal glands and she doesn't have any odor going on and another sign was depression? Well I don't think she is depressed, she seems just as happy as ever and playing fine with her toys and eating fine as well. She isn't hiding from us either. Going to the vet at least this week is not an option. Peter has a dr's appt as well that we have to pay for (no, not for scooting! ) so there is no extra money.

I'm not sure about the scooting, but Missy had to have her anal glands expressed two weeks ago. She seemed perfectly fine. She was playing and eating normally. She didn't seem depressed or in pain. There were no strange odors. I noticed she hadn't had a bowel movement for a couple of days, and then I heard a little cry coming from her litterbox. I took her to the vet and they told me her anal glands her full and were making it difficult for her to make a bowel movement. They expressed them, and now she's going like a champ.

I'm not sure if that's what is going on with your civvie, but Missy didn't really demonstrate any symptoms when her's were full.

FWIW, Mishka didn't eat and for Mishka that is a major sign something isn't right. Took her in and of course it was a weekend so we had to go to ER. Whether it happend in the carrier over or with the vet searching around we'll never know but her anal gland had ruptured. No sign of a butt problem.......no licking, no scooting around, nothing to clue me in she was having a problem. What a mess but it did heal up. I check her now by feeling around her butt and I caught it the next time because I felt a little pea size lump starting. We expressed the gland and she was fine. She has "fluffy pantaloons" so seeing anything is near impossible, have to feel for it. Never know with kitties @-)

hmmm .. thanks you guys .. now I wonder if that is her problem? She has been making contributions to the LB and we haven't heard anything coming from her when she is in there. I wish money wasn't always so tight! Hopefully nothing happens between now and next week when we might be able to squeeze in another vet visit. Doesn't help matters that going to the vet for an office visit jumped up 8.00 in price. Now it's $45.00 just to walk in the door!

Yes, it is possible for an indoor cat to get worms. In most cases, it is caused by fleas and fleas can get in your home without the cat having been outside. Whether the worms would have been apparent last month would depend of if they were present last month. Sometimes (although not all the time), you can see little bits of what looks like rice around the kitty's bum and that is a pretty clear sign of worms. The anal glands are another possibility if they haven't been expressed. I don't know how to do that, and I don't think I would if I could (ick!), but that should be only a few minute stop at the vet's office.

Smokie has to have her anal glands expressed sometimes. That is the main reason i had
to take her to vet her last visit(scooting)

Would your vet let you come in and get the steroid injections to give at home when they need them so that you could save on vet visits? My vet will let me take home anything i have ever asked for.

Your love for your kitties is evident.

thanks guys. I have checked the best I could (and peter too) around her behind for any signs of that rice looking stuff and so far neither of us have seen that. The only thing we see around her behind area is some dried poop in the fur area by her actual you know, "behind" I feel wrong saying the other word! If she scoots again this week (it is not an everyday thing, or even a weekly thing) I will schedule her appt for next week. I have a 10% off coupon my mom tore off a local restaurants placemat for my vet for any "service" but it expires on the 30th so she will need to go in by then. My vet is one of those vets that REALLLLLY urges you to go in, they don't even do answers to questions over the phone. If her anal glands are fine (I would imagine they could tell??) what would they do then? Another fecal exam? What if that comes back negative again? Could it be an allergic reaction to her food causing her behind to itch her? Thanks again for all your help!

Have you cleaned her rear? If you have baby wipes use that to clean her area and while you are doing it look closely and feel the area to see if she has any lumps or bumps anything that may be red and angry looking.

When Maui had anal gland issues it lookrd like an angry pimple that was about an inch below the hole. In the fur area. I learned how to express it and it similar to popping a pimple. Bot touching it but popping around the area.

She didn't scoot or show signs of discomfort rather it was large enough that I saw it easily.

My Sydney if she gets poop stuck to her or thinks its there she will do the scoot shuffle. And I then baby wipe her butt.

If you don't see worms and she recently tested negative my guess is this probably isn't the issue. Not if its contonuing after the test.

Interesting idea about allergy food related. Don't kniw amnything about it so can't comment.

If you do take her in ask the vet to show you what anal gland issue looks like so you lknow what to look for and to teah you how to express its not hard to do.

hillary, thank you for describing where maui's problem was. To be honest, I did not even know where to look. She was up on the counter last night with her butt up in the air, tail high so I squatted down and tried to get a real good look. I cannot even believe I did that, let alone come on here and brag about it  I didn't see anything out of the ordinary other then some dried crusties on her actual behind. I didn't see anything like a red angry pimple but perhaps I overlooked it? I will try to look again today. The other night I tried holding her while peter checked but she used her claws to climb up my chest and near my throat and then jumped down off my shoulder and took off running in utter embarrassment. She can't stand being touched
