I found out tonight, by chance, that Scooter LOVES raw meat... wow!

I was deboning some chicken breasts for dinner tonight when I thought hmm... I wonder what Scooter would think... so I cut him a small piece of breast and showed it to him. He tried to GRAB my hand and pull it towards him!! He ate it in about .2 seconds, licked my fingers, and demanded more.

Is it normal for a cat to accept raw like that? Or is Scooter just a food machine? Do we have a shot at feeding raw here? I had thought about it before, but figured the transition would be more difficult than I feel like attempting right now...

I don't know what the raw food scene is like in Canada... I'm sure I could find some premade raw foods somewhere, but how cost effective are they compared to canned foods like Wellness? Is it safe to give him some raw stuff every once in a while, when I prep dinner nights like tonight? :shock:
 
Sounds like you have real shot at feeding a raw diet...and yes, my kids always get raw chicken scraps when I'm fixing chicken or I wouldn't live very long...lol

That's exciting news! I was so not expecting him to eat it, I was thinking more of the "this isn't my food" reaction... but nope... it was "GIVE ME MORE, WOMAN!"

I just don't know if I should bother with a premade raw diet at this point... I think it would be more expensive than canned. Is it really safe to feed raw human-food muscle meat regularly, or does that risk diet imbalance? I don't think I can afford a grinder... but I could do chunks... where does one find rabbit meat and such, anyway? :?
 
If you are going to feed raw as a regular diet you have to add things to it, but giving him bites every now and then isn't going to hurt anything. Mine get it as treats. Not sure in Canada where you find stuff like raw rabbit but here in Nebraska...its in the grocery store right next to the chicken...lol With my herd it isn't cost effective to feed a raw diet as much as I would like to. But with Scooter being an only child it might be worth looking into. I know Dr Lisa has a recipe for raw on her website.

Patty feeds Champ raw. I used to feed a raw diet because I wanted more control over the ingredients and initially, my guys wouldn't eat Wellness.

Dr. Lisa's site has a recipe for a raw diet. You can also buy a pre-mix that contains all of the supplements and add it to raw ground chicken.
 
I know that Natures Variety is kind of expensive. Plus there is vegetables in it which cats really don't need.
I had a post awhile back about feeding raw. There were a few raw feeders that posted comments on it. Dr. lisa commented on it too. In the long run its suppose to be cheaper then canned food. So much better too.

Thanks for the links! I'd probably have to go with something like the TCfeline but I need to sit down and do some calculations to see if it's going to be worth the time/investment.
 
1 pack of TCfeline Plus makes 11,700g of food (3 months worth) - $45
So $15/month for TCF.

Bone in chicken breast 3.50/lb
Bone in chicken thighs 1.50/lb
Let's say we get 375g of usable meat from each pound. Might be more, might be less. A scale will tell me.
There are 31.2 x 375g portions in 11,700g.
If I do half and half, each meat will be 15.6 x 375g portions. I will find a good ratio.
Chicken breast will be roughly $55 / 3 months, thighs will be roughly $23.50 / 3 months.
So both meats will be $78.50 / 3 months.
Total cost / month = about $41. Before taxes and before shipping. So probably closer to $50 a month. Plus whatever else for the labor!
WELLNESS : $37.00 per case after tax - 12 cans per case. 2.5 cases per month. $92/month
FRISKIES: $1.30 per can after tax. $40/month
