Jinx tested at 309 at 9pm so I gave him his 2 units with 1/2 can of wet. 3 hours later he was at 84. Fed him a bit of kibble. 30 mins later he dropped to 51 and was acting like putty in my hands. Rushed him to ER because I was terrified he was going to drop lower. The half hour drive caused his #'s to go up and er doc told me to check his BG's for next few hours to make sure they're not dipping again. He's at 237 now. But that 51 has been the lowest he's ever been and that was unbelievably scary. He's mad at me but otherwise seems to be returning to the normal, playful sir that he is.
 
You need to reduce the dose, Dez!!! Don't give 2IU Lantus again.

That was a bit of a tough night. I'm glad Jinx is OK; you did the right thing taking him to the ER for help. It's always better to be safe and err on the side of caution.

It's not clear from your post whether you gave Jinx any extra carbs when he was at 51 so ... for future reference if BG is less than 68 on an Alphatrak you should rub some honey or karo on the gums straight away, especially if there are hypo symptoms (as was the case last night). If you do ever need to take an emergency trip to the vets for help you need to bring the honey/karo with you and keep applying it to the kitty's gums during the travel time. (Honey/karo can raise levels quickly but the effect also wears off quickly so it is safest to give repeated applications until the kitty can be assessed by the vet.)

Thank goodness you were home testing and that you caught the low.

@Ann and Murphy and Tom : He recovered quickly last night. I think the 1/2 hour car ride to/from ER caused his BG to spike right up because about an hour after I got home, he was in the 230's (and 90's for the doc). I overfed him dry while I was freaking out about everything, so I think that caused a number in 500's this morning. So now I feel like I'm back to square one trying to work him back into an average range, and he seems a bit more lethargic today than usual. He's eating/drinking/going to the bathroom fine but not as playful as usual. My husband told me he slept most of the day and he's still sleeping now (other than feedings/BG checks).

Be conservative about dosing and conscientious in your testing; his body may now be MUCH more sensitive to insulin. Extra caution at these times is advisable.

@Critter Mom : Thank you, I will take caution. His numbers have been pretty high today. Since he's been diagnosed, I always worried about DKA and never thought about hypo until last night. Wake up call!
 
@Critter Mom : Just a little update. I pulled out his beloved lazer pointer, dragged him out of bed and actually got him scooting and running around the house for about 10 minutes. So a little energy before he gave up... and now he's bothering/cleaning fat boy (my other kitty).

Exercise is really good for them!! It makes the cells more receptive to the insulin.....In the past 5-6 months that I've been trying to get China to lose weight by spending time playing with her each day, she's gone from almost 3 units down to .5

It doesn't happen like that for every cat, but any exercise is beneficial
