I am sharing this story as it has a good ending.
Marley had been in remission for over 4 months, previously on lantus. He stopped eating and drinking on July 16, lethargic, scant green pus in eyes, sneezing, febrile, and new onset hyperglycaemia which I was hoping was just an infection response.
Lantus 1 unit restarted for blood sugars 11.0, 13.7, 16.8. I had to hand feed Marley small balls of soft food. He did pee daily and I was not convinced he was drinking any water. Did not move from chair, groggy look.
Yesterday, he appeared slightly better! He was moving around and ate lunch independently for the first time in 3 days. His blood sugar was 13.2 amac and he had his 4th shot of lantus 1 unit. I had a vet appointment for 2:00 after a miserable weekend with a sick, lethargic cat. I checked his blood sugar 4 times with ACCU-CHEK Guide and it stated E-3 each time which meant technical problem or very high blood sugar. Noooooo, I thought- he was looking better! He was acting better!
At the vet yesterday, his blood sugar was normal at 5.2. Hurrah!! (Stupid meter!). He was diagnosed with a herpes viral infection- the number one reason for eye infection in cats. We humans and cats cannot get away from these tricky viruses this year! “

“ Herpesvirus infection, also known as feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR), is an infectious disease caused by feline herpesvirus type-1. As with other herpes viruses, the virus is very species specific,. The virus can infect cats of all ages.
FVR is a major cause of upper respiratory disease in cats, and is the most common cause of conjunctivitis (inflammation of the tissues surrounding the eye, especially the lining of the lids and the third eyelid.....

This morning, Marley came upstairs for the first time in days, woke me to be fed. Accucheck still registered E-3 and I went to work for 8 hours. I came home with a borrowed blood sugar monitor from my workplace and the reading was again normal at 4.2. Hurrah again!!

I was so relieved as I thought it might be something way more serious!
