sigh...what will it take to raise that dose and get those spot checks hon? let me know...maybe i can help.
 
samwise has been over 600 all day long. he is going to die at this rate...if every +6 is HI this is an indication that he is in trouble and needs your help.
 
Sorry you and Sam are having a rough time Sue. Some cats just seem to get good # really easily, and others are more of a challenge. Especially if he isn't eating well, it makes it hard to know what to do. I find his #s a little confusing, the patterns are just different from those I am more used to, so I don't feel very comfortable giving you specific advice.

If I were you I would probably be at least considering switching insulins - when you've raised the dose you've gotten some unexpected lows so that would certainly concern me, but obviously this dose isn't working either. The benefit of some of the other insulins is they have a pretty clear-cut process to follow to know exactly what dose to give, when to change it, etc. It's not a magic bullet, but if I were in your shoes that's what I would be thinking about. I'm not saying you can't get him regulated on PZI, just that it's not looking like an easy road so far.

Anyhow... just my 2c. Great job getting a spot check in today, sorry the results weren't more encouraging.
 
I think the shooting into those lows has been part of the problem.
Am I mistaken or did you shoot a skinny 2u into a green?
See this is 101, never shoot the green. Or maybe you shot .2, but it looked like 2u.

I think it's great that you are continuing to test and that you are posting and keeping up with the spreadsheet. Is there any kind of response you would like from us? Any questions you might have?

The vet was thinking of changing insulins and wanted to wait until he finished his antibiotics to see if the Uti was what was causing the high numbers. Sam still has some of the antibiotic left and an appt. on the 14th. I am going to call her today and get her thoughts on changing earlier or an earlier appt. as I'm as sick of this **** just like you all are.
 
I know that I am not sure what to say or how to support you, Sue. I am concerned that Sam has been in high numbers so long. I know you are working with your vet but, even considering the infection, he is in what I would consider dangerous numbers, all day and night. We want to help, but just aren't sure what you want us to do.

Thank you for responding and giving us the information about what you are thinking of doing. I do not think we are sick of this---I think we are frustrated because we would like to be helpful to you and don't know how. You were very clear in letting us know that you do NOT want to be told your cat might die. Is there anything else you would like to hear (or not hear?)
 
I am sorry Sue, I should not have actually said that. I know what it's like being a newbie and being told what to do and not liking the advice cause I find myself in that situation right now with levemir.

It is so hard to see kitty in those high's for an entire day when you have the insulin right there and clearly he is not in rebound at this point.
Do you know what that amount of bg does to the body? Helping him now will be so much easier than god forbid having to help him later. kwim? he's not getting the fluid or nutrition into his cells of his body with those high bg's.
I hate when peeps are telling me to do something with the levemir and I just don't understand what the hell is going on...but sometimes I just break and follow the common theme of thought. Hating it...but 9 times out of 10 it has helped us.

Thanks Lori. I know everyone is concerned as I am about Sam. He has been high for a long time and since he can't talk he can't tell me what the hell is going on with him. He's not a vocal cat and seeing him in this state has me about tearing out my hair. I get rid of the old vet and get a new one and she's slow about implementing change! Obviously, it's not the UTI that is causing the high numbers, it has to be the insulin. We are going to raise it tonight depending on his number at PMPS even if she doesn't call. I know what high BG is doing to Sam and like my pony, Chester who has awful laminitis and I can't get the backhoe guy to dig a hole cuz the ground is frozen and his backhoe won't start, I can't have my suffering, in huge pain pony put to sleep! Poor Sam, must be wondering what the hell is going on and why he doesn't feel well. He is eating again today and I was surprised his BG wasn't any higher than it was at +6. So, we muddle on and try to get some kind of answers from the medical side. :YMSIGH:
 
Sue he must be freezing to death out there to by himself..and now with laminitis? so painful. why can't you have him put to sleep. would it be the more loving thing to do?
 
I would put him to sleep but if you read the above post you would see that the ground is frozen, the undertaker can't get his backhoe started, it's been below zero here for a couple of days. We have to wait until it warms up a bit. He is on Bute, ( a painkiller) but it's only keeping him sort of comfortable. I had a blanket on him and he took it off, so he didn't need it. He is very hairy after all he is a Shetland pony used to rough weather and cold temps. I can't very well bring him in the house. He's out of the wind which is the most important thing. You don't understand, horses are better off without heavy blankets, it makes the hair coat lay down, which makes them colder, if the hair can't fluff up and trap air. His ears are still warm and he is eating and drinking enough to stay warm and hydrated. He hasn't stopped eating so he's holding his own. As soon as it warms up enough to dig a hole, the vet will come and put him down.
 
((((Sue)))) If it is any consolation (probably not LOL) my kitty was in high #s for a long time. Thankfully he tolerated it well, and eventually we got things on track. In his case though it was from dry food, so at least the cause was clear.

How is Sam acting? Is he drinking & peeing tons? I'm not sure if you are worried whether the dose is too high or too low, like I was. In our case, I finally realized that it was clear from his symptoms that the dose was too low. It is amazing what a difference it can make once you get the insulin at the levels they need (and I don't know what Sam needs, I don't have a clear fix on his #s, so not commenting at all on that aspect of it).

So sorry about your pony, that must really be breaking your heart. That's good at least you can give him Bupe, I'm sure that is a big help.

That's good Sam is eating today, yay!
 
Sam decided he was hungry about 9PM and ate about half a 5.5 oz can of Merricks BG Beef food. He thought that was the best thing ever. Chester is still hanging in there, this morning he was up when I went out to feed him.
