I don't know if you are looking for any advice, but I don't understand why you aren't testing for ketones. DKA can be deadly and it is so easy to stay ahead of it by ketone testing. With the high numbers you are seeing, I think it would be a prudent thing to do.
 
Great. If you have trouble catching him in the act, put torn up paper or aquarium gravel in the litter box and leave him alone with it. There should be enough of a puddle for you to do the test.
