Well, I did the inevitable tonight and joined the k9diabetes.com forum! The members have been very nice and seem more than willing to help Sally and me. It seems, that I am really going to be a GOOD fit for the site.......There is no Spreadsheet!!!! Maybe, once I get aquainted over there, I can get Saint Sue to join me and introduce the SS to the group. The SS could be "my" gift to the canine diabetic world!!!!

They test the dogs on their inner lip. I am sticking with Sally's ear, as it seems to be working fine. The members say that Sally's number look great......believe it or not....I think I am micro-dosing!!! Imagine that, me micro-dosing!

Sally goes back tomorrow to the vet hospital for follow up blood work. Hopefully, she will be released back to my regular vet for treatment. I will continue to update you about Sally--- I appreciate your support!

Me, Micro-dosing

lol
eventually, the "SS Guilt" will get to you. Hey, that IS good news, because now you'll have extra time to update Kitty's

Whole new world when micro-dosing is done at the 4-5 unit level,

Carl

It seems, that insulin is more "weight based" in dogs. They actually have a starting scale that is tailored to weight. It appears common for dogs in Sally's weight range to easily be receiving 15 units bid.

Having two diabetic pets is nothing I wished for, but it will be interesting to dance with a dog! In fact, I think I have already done that a few times in my life!

And you obviously dance very well together, too!

Hope you'll still keep us updated about Sally...even if she is a dog. ;-) (That last part came from Poopy, ya know!) cat_pet_icon

You never cease to amaze me, Kim. Two pets with diabetes and you haven't lost your sense of humor or positive attitude.
I supposed this summer, you'll pack both of them off to the beach...

I love it!!! You are going to introduce them to the world of spreadsheets :-D . How on earth do they keep it straight without a ss?

kse,

I would love to hear your technique. Is it similar to testing felines on the ear? I am not seeing any videos on the k9 website to see if there are similarities.

Michelle,
From what Kim said earlier, the regular spot to get blood from doggie is on the inner lip (how can that NOT hurt?). Kim's a rebel! She's sticks with what she knows!

Feeling sort of deprived here....Kim says she's got a SS started on Sally, and meanwhile, Kitty's has collected an inch or two of dust since the last update...

I will not be allowed to do a lip stick on my patient, and the tail stick will probably be out of the question. Foot pad might be ok, but my patients are 100% outdoors animals. I need something that is accessible to me and safe, and also safe for the animal, which equals ears to me.

 ohmygod_smile I'm surprised they don't get their hands bitten off.

Hi Michelle!

The people on the canine site that test the ears (very few), shave the outer edge of the ear and test the same area we do on cats. But, like Carl said, I normally do things a little unorthodoxed, so that is NOT the area of the ear that I am testing! I actually am testing in the middle are of the ear, just about an inch above the ear canal opening. Initially, it did not want to bleed, but now I am pricking it and it is bleeding, just enough to get a sample. I really am having no problems testing her there-- though, I am sure it is not a preferred testing site.

I am using a 26 guage lancet.

Kim

When you hold a flashlight up to the ear, can you see blood vessels? I'll be honest here.. IF I am allowed to, I will not be testing a dog, but a wolf.. and I fear the physiology is going to be very different (and I will not be allowed to shave any fur), so I want to go in this with the ability to kind of not look like an ass in front of scientists.

Yes, I can see the blood vessel under a regular household lamp. I have been going back to the "same" area to get the test and it is bleeding okay.

They also say you can test the carpal pad on the dog. Would that be an option on a wolf?

If it interest you, I could send you a photo of the area I am testing if you pm me an email address. I have tested her tonight, but I could get you a shot in the morning while I am testing. Let me know!

sigh....too late Barbara, I saw it already! :o

sometimes the anti-male sentiment here just makes me so saddened. Good thing I'm in touch with my feminine side, so I don't take it too personally!

Have we seen a photo of Sally here yet? Did I miss it? Love to see one if you have not done so.
Carl

I am sure I could test in a foot pad, but I would rather not have to go to that option, as they are 100% outdoor animals and I don't want to risk damage. If even a little damage might occur, I will not request to be able to do my own testing. I will PM you for that photo. Thanks for your help!

I didn't read it as derogatory, but I have (literally) danced with dogs. We have our dogs stand on their hind legs, hold their paws and "dance" with them (usually accompanied by singing "shall we dance"). My family has done it for years with our springer & cocker spaniels.

Yes, I have done that also. I was really just joking, knowing Carl would see it, I think Carl was also. If not & you were offended Carl I'm sorry.

I got the joke, Barbara. I was laughing as I was replying.

You guys crack me up....I don't think I have ever felt offended here!
