My cat is big-boned and she's also nearly 18 pounds (a lot to love, lol!). :cat: I've been told before that she needs to lose weight, but I honestly don't know how to do it. I will be doing more reading and looking around on here tonight because I'm sure there are resources, but thought I would also post my own thread on it and would love to hear your guys' stories and advice too.
Today a vet told me to decrease her insulin dose even though she's getting better numbers, and the reasoning was: she's gaining weight. o_O I don't agree with that being a good reason to decrease insulin lol.
My cat is not very active and it's hard to get her moving around and playing. If anything, I'm the one jumping around and losing calories in my attempts to get her to exercise! :p But I also feel bad about the idea of restricting her food, plus worry about her not having enough food to eat if her BG were to get too low. She currently free-feeds and eats both wet and dry. Any tips on how to get a cat exercising more and safely losing weight?
Thanks!

I've just been reading on this myself, as my girl is arthritic and carrying too much weight at the moment.

I'm sure you've already considered this, but if you can managed to get off dry, it really does help - it's just so calorie dense. I found Dr. Pierson's cat food chart a long time ago and got her her wet-only; it really has made a difference.

One thing I did use to do as a treat was to take 5-10 piece of dry food and throw it across the room for her to chase. It was fun for the both of us.

Good luck!

Thanks for the idea. I'll try that and see if she'll get up and move, lol.

Feed less. Per vet records my Nala was originally about 18 lbs and was urinating everywhere when she was surrendered to a shelter. Shelter determined she was diabetic. I adopted her and controlled how much she ate not she is between 9-10 lbs and in remission. My DeeDee was 17lbs when I dopted her She was o \n 2 units of Vetsulin. She was surrendered since her caretaker was going into the hospital for undetermined amount of time. I fed less and now she is 9-10 lbs and in remission. I frequently weighed both and adjusted amount accordingly.
