It has been several weeks since the whole diabetic episode with Roy and he hasn't had any juice for a very long time (YAY!!!). I have been feeding him nothing but FF, as well, my other 3 cats are now just on FF. Here's what's been happening:

*Since I took away the big bowl of dry munch that everyone grazed on during the day, all the cats, including Roy seem hungry all the time. Maybe I am not feeding them enough FF...and to be candid I am not sure how much FF I should be feeding them, and if someone could give me some advice, I'd appreciate it.*

*Last night, I had inadvertently left out a bag of Temptations on the shelf (I give those to my 3 other cats) and Roy got into them. Matter of fact he had his head stuck in the bag. If I hadn't been worried about glucose and all that stuff it may have even been funny. So, I tested him just now and he is a 3.5 and I am not concerned.

*Actually, Roy is doing very well, he runs around in the yard chasing squirrels, eats grass and has a grand old time. I am at ease with him.

*I have been reading the food charts and I would like to be able to put down the big bowl of dry munch, one that all my cats could graze on (including Roy) and I am not sure as to which one to get. I had the diabetic dry cat food from the Vet and my cats wouldn't go near it. They are used to eating Whiskas Dry Seafood. Does anyone have a suggestion? I need mention that we are all up here in Canada.

My thanks go out to all of you Ladies and Carl once again for saving my sanity and Roy.

Kindest regards.

There is a lower carb dry food (EVO) but in some cats, that much grazing could throw them back in diabetic numbers. (once a diabetic, always a diabetic)

You can let them graze on wet or you can get an automatic feeder that opens several times a day. I would say, an average cat at his ideal weight who is moderately active could eat between 2 and 3 cans of Fancy Feast a day. There is a formula which someone will probably find for you.

I know it is hard in multiple cat families, but I personally would try as hard as I could not to feed dry.

Hi Cheryl and Roy!
Thanks for the update.

It all depends on how much they weigh, and how many calories are in each can. A basic formula that I use is 20 calories per pound of ideal body weight, per day.
So Bob weighs 14 lbs, and I try to make sure he gets between 250 and 300 calories a day, which would be about 3 cans of FF.

Binky's charts include calories per can info so that might help you figure out how many cases per week you are going to need. ;-)

Glad to hear that the dry didn't push his BG over the line! And to read that he is acting like "old Roy" instead of sugarRoy.

Of course, Whiskas isn't on binky's dryfood list..... but here is a link to the list.

You'll see I think 2 choices that are below 10% carbs. I'm 99.9% certain that whiskas is over the line, given that the majority of commercial dry is in the 20-40% range.
Just keep in mind, once a sugar, always a sugar. Even lower carb dry can make Roy's numbers creep up. If you absolutely have to feed dry, you need to find the lowest possible carbs. And really keep a close eye on Roy. I don't think you want a 2nd round on the dance floor?

Remember - dry food may be associated with an increased risk of urinary tract problems, including renal failure and blockage - cats don't drink enough to compensate for the fact they are eating a water-depleted diet.

Just as a reminder, Roy had ONE high blood sugar test at the vet's office on which the vet based his diagnosis.

All home tests have been NORMAL blood sugar levels.

Blue Wilderness is a dry food that has 18% carbs and EVO Cat & Kitten has 8% carbs. When I was transitioning my dry food addicts to canned food, I transitioned the dry foods at the same time (offering more and more canned food)

As far as the amount of food --- my 4 cats would go through about 12 cans of Fancy Feast per day (about 36 oz) -- but if I feed Wellness or Merricks BG food with a little Fancy Feast mixed in, they eat about 30 oz of canned food per day. (they LOVE FF and pig out on it)

My cats are smaller and less active than your cats, Cheryl, so I would think your cats need more food.
