My cat Gus has been fighting diabetes for some time.. He is a rescue cat and I guess he is somewhere around 15 years old... He was insulin dependent (Lantus) a few years ago. I was able to regulate it and after a few months, he was able to be insulin free since then..

Round 2..... It came back with a vengeance. His new Dr recommended Novelin R. It didn't work..Giving him shots 3 times a day. I have switched back to Lantus. His numbers are better (twice a day) but still not where they should be.. At least he is somewhat stabilized..

This round of Diabetes has caused some new problems though. He is starting to cry early in the morning and now cry's any time he wants something.. The vet says other than his diabetes, he is healthy. Almost like he is crying to get his way....

The second is a bigger problem.. He has started to urinate in FRONT of his"main" litter box and on the wall after he has used it once.... Note, We have 2 cats and 3 litter boxes This is a real pita..I have cleaned and swapped litter boxes around. It makes no difference.. He did this near a second box as well.

I have been forced to keep him in the bathroom when I a not home.. I can not let him "roam" anymore.. I have used all the advertised "cleaners" in hops of removing any smell.. Nothing has worked

Any ideas how to make him stop crying and use the litter box the way he did before his current bout with Diabetes??

Thanks

Welcome to FDMD, the best place you never wanted to be! :)

I haven't got a single idea about how to stop the crying, maybe he is hungry? I know higher numbers can make our sugarkitties incredibly hungry. Maybe try leaving out a bowl of a low carb dry food, like Young Again, for him to nibble on?

As for the litter box issues: when my cat started going outside the box I switched litters to Okocat wood pellet litter, and mixed it with Cat Attract litter. You can also get the Cat Attract additive that is designed to sprinkle on your regular litter, I have a container of this but haven't tried it yet because I still have some of the litter but once that is gone I will use the additive. It's not perfect but it seems to work 95-98% of the time. I also use Feliway spray or one of the cheaper knock-offs, that seems to help a lot.

Good luck! Please keep us posted and let us know if you find solutions that work for you!

What is current Lantus dose and what are Bgs before shot and at abut 6 hours?
What were BGs and does when R was used?
What are you feeding?
How Gus' weight doing? Losing?

Since this is your second go-'round with diabetes, you probably already know this , but I should have added that, as a rule, we don't normally recommend feeding dry food, it tends to be very high in carbs and seriously lacking in moisture, but several people have had good luck with the Young Again Zero Carb dry food. Another lower carb dry option is Evo, it works for some people and not for others; I tried it and it made my kitty's BG rise, but others have used it successfully.
