We are back again. Squeaker went into remission last September after a 2 month odyssey in diabetes. His was caused by steroids. At the time he was diagnosed with diabetes, the steroids had also damaged his heart leading to Restrictive Cardiomyopathy, enlarged liver, anemia, enlarged heart, enlarged kidneys, and pancreatitis. Squeaker was put on a host of medications including Lantus and for the most part he recovered well. He went into remission in early in September, but about 2 weeks later he experienced congestive heart failure. Then in March of 2014 he was diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure. From Sept 2013 to April 2014 his glucose had not run higher than 113. I checked his glucose Tuesday night and the meter hit 589. I rushed him to the emergency vet hospital where they decided to keep him overnight and give him short acting insulin. The following day the internist (same one who treated him last fall) put him back on Lantus. The first round of diabetes the dose was 3 units BID; this time he was started at 1 unit BID. Pancreatitis is also suspected.
Has anyone experienced a relapse after so long in remission? I kept Squeaker on a very strict low carb diet of no more than 7% carbs. He has not received any treats or nibbles of anything; all he got was his low carb food. I am confused as to what could have caused this relapse and if remission is possible for a second time. The test results for pancreatitis won't be in until sometime the coming week. If anyone has any ideas about what could have caused this relapse I would love to hear from you.

Anita and Squeaker

Oh man Anita, I'm sorry to hear that! I know it's rough when they fall out if remission and Squeaker has been through a lot! He's a fighter!

I'm not sure what would have caused it...I think it could possibly be illness...I know that can raise BG levels.

I don't really have any experience with this or words of wisdom...I'm sure someone will be along who can give more info soon. I just wanted to say hello and offer some encouragement and a hug! We are here for you!

So sorry to hear Squeaker is back on the juice. Illness and the need for a dental are common reasons for needing to start insulin again. I hope he gets through it this time too. Marje wrote a detailed post on pancreatitis that might help. I've seen kitties have to go back on insulin that have pancreatitis attacks.
