Rosa is still not doing well at all. After her recovery from her surgery, she went downhill fast. It turns out that her benazepril (for proteinuria) wasn't given to her while she was in hospital...while they were giving her IV fluids to flush her system. The duty doctor misunderstood what it had been prescribed for and because her BP was normal, decided she didn't need it. Her total protein and albumin are low and she has ascites. She had fluid drained last week and more fluid drained today. They took more blood work today, but unless that comes back at least stable if not improved, then we really have no more options left to try - we may have to say goodbye to her this weekend before the fluid builds back up. We will get the blood work results tomorrow morning. Please pray for us - she's still fighting, but I can't ask her to fight if there's no hope for recovery.

Oh, (((April))), you poor love. I'm so sorry you're going through this.
Sending healing well-wishes to your beautiful Rosa, and huge hugs to her wonderful Mum...

Oh April! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm so very sorry to hear Rosa is not doing well. Sending a truckload of healing vines for Rosa and hugs for you! Keeping you all in our prayers!

April, I am so sorry to hear that Rosa isn't doing well. I'm keeping the positive thought for her, and sending you infinite prayers and healing vines. Hugs to you and gentle chin scritches for Rosa. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thank you everyone. No update yet - we won't know anything more until we get her blood work results back tomorrow. I'm not hopeful though at this point. They even handed me the 'how do you know when it's time' paperwork today, so I don't think the specialist is hopeful either.

I'm so sorry, April... this is such a difficult time. Hoping that the power of this board can turn things round for Rosa.

Sending tight hugs from across the pond...

Diana

April, sending prayers, vines and hugs to you and Rosa!
Keeping fingers and paws crossed for recovery!
Lots of love from

Thank you all so much. The specialist didn't even call me with Rosa's results yesterday - needless to say I'm furious as we've lost a whole day's potential treatment time. He has about 30 minutes this morning to call me before I call him - and that conversation isn't going to go well if he doesn't take the initiative to call me first.

Oh, gosh, April. How very frustrating and stressful...

....Hoping you get the results soon, and hoping for some encouraging news... :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Well, I am even more furious now. I called them - he isn't even in work today. I just told the receptionist they'd better find those results and email them to me...if he doesn't feel like helping I'll figure it out myself!

Let me put it this way...if I don't have results in my inbox in the next hour, I'm driving over there. It's a 45 minute drive each way and if I have to do that to get something I should have had by phone and email yesterday, the scene in their reception area is not going to be pretty.

Well, that was fun. The specialist was in all along. I called back and told them I needed those results and I needed them NOW. Next thing I know, I'm talking to the specialist - apparently he was 'trying to catch up on paperwork'. Anyway, it seems her potassium is holding level (a little high, but not dangerously so), her creatinine is higher as is her phosphorus (so more phosphorus binder for Rosa...not a big deal). But her albumin level is increasing slowly - and that's her main issue at the moment. So I demanded the meds I want to try with her and they're going to be prescribed this afternoon for me to pick up later on. And we have to get her a re-check in 2 weeks. She has a long way to go, but there is a small chance at this point that she might make it. :)

Rosa is indeed a most fortunate kitty to have a mum like you. DAMN those specialists for making you have to fight for information and causing you more grief and frustration than you already have!!

At least the reports are promising and with your advocacy Rosa will have the best chance possible to make it through all this.

Many prayers and hugs sent your way

:bighug: :bighug: :bighug:

Go April go! Well done, shame that you had to have extra stress due to dealings with the vet.
Sending more healing vines for Rosa and big hugs to you!

Thank you all so very much. Rosa still has a long way to go before we'll know if she's going to make it or not. But again, the power of this board's healing vines and prayers have given her a chance to fight. And thank you for the hugs too - they are much needed at the moment...it's been a very stressful few days and we have more stress coming yet before we know whether or not the new treatment plan will be successful!

Did they test the fluid to see what was causing it? The reason I ask is that my Callie has been building up fluid ( drained twice) and they found out it was a bacterial and fungal infection. They grew the cultures so we would know they best antibiotics to treat her. We are still waiting on the fungal one. Prayers to you and Rosa. This is a very bumpy ride.

Both you and Rosa will feel better with her at home, no matter how sick she is. We had a cat that was partially paralysed due to a stroke. My hubby and I had decided to have him put down. Sometimes during his last night, he crawled down the hallway and climbed into bed with our 2.5 year old granddaughter. When I got up early in the morning and found them cuddled together, I just broke down. It is important for cats to be with the people they love when they are ill.

They did test it Lisa. They found no infection at all and no malignancy. The lab that tested it came up with several options (the fluid analysis was run by a different person than the blood work) but all the options apart from hypoalbuminemia (which is verified by Rosa's blood work) had been ruled out by either blood work or ultrasound or both. Which is why it infuriates me that the hospital will not admit that it's the loss of protein that has caused the problem even though that is clearly the case and is trying to wriggle out of any blame at all for the decision taken to stop her benazepril (and by doing so allowing her to lose huge amounts of protein in her urine) while they diuresed her for a total of 5 days.

That's awful. You know they will never admit to making a mistake. I feel so bad. Time for another vet.
I wish I could, but this is the local ER and the only place that has the specialists who can help her. The specialists are, overall, fine apart from refusing to admit that someone else made a mistake there. The duty vets, not so much...some are good and some, apparently, have very little clue about critically ill cats.

Right now your biggest concern is getting Rosa healthy. After all that is done with then maybe you can approach the clinic and try to set things straight. It certainly sounds as if they were the cause of all Rosa's current problems, but you can deal with that later. :bighug: :bighug:

My feelings exactly Mary Ann. I can't alienate them completely at this point as Rosa still needs those specialists on board and my days are focused around trying to get Rosa feeling better. However, the individual (whose name I do have from Rosa's notes) who made the horrible decision to withhold her benazepril will be gone after at a later date.
