I introduced Romeo a week or two ago. We are slowly progressing nicely to figure out insulin dosage. I am using calipers and am at 1.75 U Prozinc. We aren’t quite out of the renal threshold but have been staying in the 200’s all day the last couple of days.

The current issue is that despite this, he has been majorly dehydrated and not eating (I am syringe feeding). I took him to the vet Friday and the snap fPL showed no question about pancreatitis. It’s been a rough weekend. I have gone up and down emotionally feeling like I am surely going to lose him to having hope when I see little signs of improvement. It doesn’t help that we lost another kitty in March to what was suspected pancreatitis. I ended up having to put him down when an X-ray showed major fluid accumulation in his belly. It could have been complicated acute pancreatitis that led to liver diesel, it could have been FIP (which I doubt), it could have been cancer. I will never know but seeing Romeo demonstrate some of the same things that Julius did just 4 months ago has me in a roller coaster of emotions. I lost Juju. I want to save Roro. Of course funds are limited as I am a single mom. Argh.

Current treatment:
Fluids (in discussion with vet as he only wants 150mL twice a week. I want less more often. Call in to him to discuss)

Cerenia (I have Odansetron also so have been giving at night on the opposite end of Cerenia since they can be used together). Also continuing the Pepcid he always has been taking.

Elura- I’m asking for a change to Mirtazipine or Cyroheptadine. I read that Elura can raise BGC (I haven’t seen this in his tests) and he HATES it. It must taste retched because he foams and salivates.

Onsior (last dose today) and then vet will switch to Gabapentin. I found a local compounding pharmacy that has Buprenephrine so I’m asking my vet to script it instead. He doesn’t carry Buprenex and that’s why he went the Onsior/Gabapentin route

This am, he’s been eating A LITTLE (1/4 can FF pate, spoonful of baby food, a few shreds kid white meat chicken breast, a few bites of Tiki Cat Mousse) but no where near enough to skip syringe feeds.

Wondering if there are other super tasty unresistable foods that a diabetic/pancreatitis cat can have that I am not thinking of? I caved and let him wet a few of his old kibble because it’s good.

I’m also anxious sbout the low carb, low fat needs of a diabetic and pancreatitis cat. FF doesn’t seem to be tooo high fat but most of the better LC brands are also higher fat. I worry if we end up seeing an IM vet (not sure I can financially do that), they will push for an RX diet which I don’t want. I also am not interested in raw/home cooked. With 5 cats, I can’t handle the amount of work or the expense of that.

Other than that, I am not sure if I am asking anything since I am throwing everything I can at this. The pain and dehydration seem to be the biggest causes of concern and likely contributing to the no eating. I am hoping that my consistency in syringe feeding is at least helping keep the glucose in check.

thanks,
Renee and Romeo

My cat recently had a pancreatitis flare up. What helped her get through it and start eating were 2 things: 1) I gave her anything and everything to get her to eat, even if it wasn't diabetic friendly. So dry food, treats, whatever. I was more worried about preventing hepatic lipidosus than anything, so I was desperate. Cats can get that pretty quickly if they don't eat enough. 2) Fortiflora. This was a real game changer. It's a tasty probiotic available at places like Petco and Petsmart. I sprinkled that on her food and that usually got her going.
Not sure if trying any of this would help your cat like it did mine, but thought I would share what worked for us.
