Does anyone know how long it takes for one to go away? My civvie has one, she got a steriod shot last Thursday & has been on Clavamox since then. I thought at first it looked better but it's still there. The vet said to let her know about how it was this week but I was just wondering how long they have lasted on other cats. I'm starting to worry there's something else going on. She also needs a dental but the vet was wanting to treat this first.

Ittle Sista had one that lasted about 3 wks. She, too received the shot but no antibiotic.

Our civvie twix has had three of them as well .. oddly enough, they only occurred in her after eating wet cat food. Not sure why, but with all dry (I know, I know!) she does not get them. Anyways, the first one was severely infected because she kept licking at it before we noticed it. She had a steroid shot and AB's. It took a few weeks for it to go away. The other two, that we caught early, did not require AB's, but still took almost a week, or just over, for them to go away.

What type of steroid, please?

I would never in a million years recommend Depo medrol, but it works within 3 days on those. Gandalf received approximately 3 shots per year for 7 years of Depo medrol for them. By age 12 he was diabetic. But he also ate almost exclusively dry, Hill's food, so it was probably the combination that caused his diabetes.

Other steroids probably take longer but are probably safer.

It says Vetalog.

Josie's looks worse than the one in the pic. It's in the corner of her mouth & it's a hard lump. It's nasty looking. If I had to guess I would say it looked infected also.

She has eaten wet food since Thumper was DX a year ago but this is the first one she has gotten. It would be a nightmare at my house if I broke out the kitty crack again...they would all revolt & want to eat it. One of my other civvies begged for it so bad for a while I would take her into the laundry room, make sure some background noise was going on & try to very quietly pour some into a bowl for her. That did not work....before I knew it the others were scratching at the door. I couldn't believe it!

Thanks for the info it makes me feel better to know they sometimes take awhile to go away.

I forgot to say that after I switched to porcelain bowls for water (was using plastic), it has not come back? Also she had a pododermitis on her tiny hand? But has not had anything else since I changed to all porcelain.... maybe have been the problem? dont know. just wanted to share that...of course, someone (cant remember who) suggested switching. ;-)

They only eat out of ceramic/glass bowls & their water dish is stainless steel but thanks for the info.

My vet told us that rodent ulcers are more common in cats with allergies, which our civvie has .. she get's tiny little hard bumps along the outer edges of her ears .. Not sure if your kitty suffers from allergies or not ..

It is most likely eosinophilic granuloma and something they carry inside especially if they were feral or indoor/outdoor.

It's good to do therapy, but in fact many of these issues come and go without apparent reason or warning. A short course of pred is better than depo which is dangerous. There is a short acting steroid that lasts only three days and may help without the risk of depo.

If I were a vet I would say a shot of Baytril followed by a 5mg tab of pred BID for five days and then taper off the pred slowly, very slowly like one tab a day for three doses then a half tab a day for three doses then a quarter tab for two doses and done.
I m not a vet and this i just from my experience. Clear this with your vet first.

Josie gets those bumps on her ears also. The last time she had them I put some Dermalone ointment on it & they went away. She sometimes scratches those so much they bleed. I have noticed her sneezing every once in a while but it's usually just one sneeze, never has been enough to go to the vet about. I think she got those bumps before when she spent a lot of time in our backyard behind the garage. I have to keep chasing her out of there, she likes to try to irritate the dog behind us.

That is what my vet mentioned.
