Re: bump on Sista's mouth???

some questions to answer:
Does it seem squishy or firm?
Anchored in 1 location, or moveable?
The same temp as surrounding tissues or warm/hot?

I'd have a vet take a look & see if its a cyst or a solid growth. If a solid growth, get a biopsy to see if its benign or not.

Re: bump on Sista's mouth???

ty bjm - .
we are trippin off to the vetbean today! I just dont want antiobotics for nothing or steriod shot???
thought someone might have experienced something of the same sort here and could offer advice. It looks like her right side is swollen a bit too so I will see what the vet says today. perhaps a tooth?? cant get her to hold still and only have 2 hands...she is a feisty one for sure and she loves to growl deeply and attack my face with both her hands and mouth. WE are working on that behavior - lol. 2 scratches on mommabeans face, on bridge of the nose and above my eye has made me decide this behavior is no longer cute

UPDATE: RODENT ULCER - bump on Sista's mouth???

I have been searching this site for info on rodent ulcers..that is what the vet said this was.. could be airborne, or food. She of course gave a steriod shot - .35 Depo-Medrol and Ittl Sista weights 5.8lbs. Now, she said this should clear this up and no antibiotics. The shot is good for 4-6 wks. If it is airborne and not food, it should clear up and probably not come back as she thinks it is mt. cedar? I think that is what she said, and that it should be over in Feb., so we are just at the edge of this time in 6 wks.
She also said if it was food, it would probably clear up and come back within the 6 wks and to let her know. There is a script tablet that I could give her 3 times a day for 1 wk, then 2 times a day after that, but for how long??? the rest of her life - she is only 6 months old???

Feeling overwhelmed AGAIN! grr_red

Should she have given us an antibiotic???

I will not do more steriod shots for her, just this one - providing I can find another way to treat if airborne. If food, I guess we start process of deletion. She already eats raw, just not 100% raw yet. It is the chicken variety. I have been giving lamb, goose and venison for treats. What other foods could it be???

She has been eating the same foods since she has been here - July 19. Could she just now be developing an allergy to the foods???
I am hoping not and that it would be airborne and only seasonal. - Hope I am hoping for the right allergy??? ohmygod_smile

Sorry, but could not wait to get out of there and home to ask the folks here for advice(wanted to pause, come here and ask yall , and then procede w/ vet visist - lol), ok and perhaps a few furry hugs.....

wish us luck w/ her bg after the 6 wks....Should I test bg during this 6 wks???

nailbite_smile nailbite_smile

tytyt for all of your thoughts

Re: bump on Sista's mouth???

Sorry, I don't have any experience with rodent ulcers, but I'm sure there is someone around who is. Could you add..."rodent ulcer advise" to you subject line so someone who does may see it and stop by?

Re: bump on Sista's mouth???

I tried, but I guess I dont know how???? ohmygod_smile

Re: bump on Sista's mouth???

Go bck to your original post, hit edit, then type the subject change and then hit submit again that will change it...I'm pretty sure Devon & Mocha have experience with her civie Twix

Mel, Maxwell, Musette & The Fur Gang

Re: Rodent ulcer

bjm,
thanks for the sites. I read thru them and the image that one of them had was just terrible - Ittle sista is not that bad but I will definately be watching over her from now on.

Re: Rodent ulcer

PeterDevonMocha have a civvie who is prone to rodent ulcers. You might want to drop Devon (she's the person who posts in the family!) a PM and ask about her experience. I believe her cat was given a steroid shot. I also think they have greater problems with the ulcers appearing in conjunction with certain foods, but I may not be remembering the food issue correctly.

Re: Rodent ulcer

ty gabby - i will ck this out today! I just cked out the lip and it is still there...wondering how long the shot will take to make it go away???

Re: Rodent ulcer

Has anyone ever used this for rodent ulcers on their babies? I am researching for alternatives for Ittle Sista in case this comes back. If so, please advise.

Re: Rodent ulcer - Tinkerbell gets these

Tinkerbell gets these, she used to get them a lot. Here is a pic to the first bout of them back in Feb 2011:

Tinkerbell Rodent Ulcers Feb 2011

The vet called it "Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex."

When Tink first got these my local vet talked about giving her steroids for it but b/c Tink is diabetic wanted to try ABs first. I appreciated this approach from my vet greatly, who did at the time say if we did have to do the steroid treatment she did not think one or two treatments would affect the diabetes much, but she wanted to research it and try the ABs first.

So we chose Clavamox. Tinkerbell 1st time got 14 days, I can't remember if it was the 62.5s or the 125s (I'll look when I get home), 1 twice a day. It started to clear up by the 2nd day. Went the whole 14-day course and it stayed gone a few weeks, 6 maybe, then came back. She got it back I think it was 3 more times, would start the Clav for 14 days, go off it, then the rodent ulcers would come back. The 3rd or 4th time her vet said to put her on it for 30 days, so I did. It cleared up pretty much for good after that. A couple times after the 30-day course she would kind of start to break out a tiny bit, then it would clear up in a day or two on its own.

I tried an e-collar on her the first time but that was a joke. She (1) hated it (2) finally figured out a way to get out of it. Once she even got stuck under the couch in it, I dunno how she got under there but she did and she couldn't get back out. I tore my house apart for about an hour trying to find her and hollering for her, terrified s/thg awful had happened to her. She is one of those cats that is not terribly vocal, she comes when I call her but isn't talkative like some of the others, so all the time I was calling for her she never uttered a peep. As a last resort I finally flipped the sofa over and there she was, just a pretty as you please, sitting there in that Elizabethan collar, staring up at me w/those gorgeous ET eyes of hers, just patiently waiting for me to come rescue her.

Little Darling.

So you might want to try a 30-day course of Clav it if comes back, that's what worked for Tinkerbell after months of trial and error.

Wondering IF we should have gotten antibiotics??? She never suggested it. I will call her about FDA Approves Atopica for Cats?? Doesnt sound like the side effects are bad really. She did suggest some kind of tables, but I have forgotten the name now...Will ask them that too.
ty for you help....

Gandalf got those - horrible ones on the pads of his feet and on his lips, but way worse than what you are seeing.

He was treated with Depo Medrol steroid - an average of 3 shots per year for 7 years. No wonder he became diabetic! But he also ate Science Diet Hairball Control dry food, so he had 2 strikes against him.

We finally moved from our apartment, where he lived for all of those 7 years (although he started getting the ulcers before I moved there but he was treated topically for them in the beginning) and after a year at our new house he stopped getting them completely. So I would consider that something in the environment is causing them. Not sure how to help you determine what, some people blame plastic bowls but Gandalf ate out of the same bowls there and here. I felt it was the carpeting, since he used to get those ulcers so bad on his foot pads.

At the time I was elated to find something which made them go away. They would break open and were painful for him. I don't remember if I was ever told the steroid could cause diabetes or not.

Here is a video about cyclosporine use in cats for this condition: http://www.navc.com/video/cyclosporine-use-feline-skin-disease-–-dr-wayne-rosenkrantz I believe they also mention the new drug you mentioned. There are other articles at that link which may be of interest to those whose cats suffer from EG.

ty very very much, just watched the whole video...funny ending...feel I get that alot around here from my girls if they do not get what they want ~ lol
I will be chatting up the vet monday... Took a look a bit ago and it seems to be going down, will try to shoot a pix tomorrow.

You know, that is really interesting, FF had a promotion one time and gave away these cute little pink heart-shaped plastic bowls when you bought so many cans of food. I got 2, one for Tink & one for Tawny. About 3 months later she started getting these rodent ulcer "breakouts." And when I switched from doing my floors w/bleach and water to Lysol. It was like every time used Lysol to mop the floors, she would break out. I switched back to bleach and water, and they have been better. I don't have any carpeting, and Tink has never gotten them on her foot pads, only around her face, neck and throat.

Interesting...

P.S. I threw the plastic bowls out about an hour ago, right b4 I read this in fact, how's that for intuition?

Very good! I don't use any plastic bowls for food or water, only ceramic or metal. I have also read plastic has been implicated in feline acne.

When the vet explained to me that those sores were probably from an allergy, I asked from what and they didn't know. We discussed it, regarding if I had changed anything in the apartment, etc and I had not. He started getting them in our old apartment a whole 100 miles away! Maybe apartment owners just use the same horrible carpeting! I don't know. But you are right it could be just about anything - very interesting that Lysol would cause a problem. Liquid Lysol (the brown stuff) is one of the most powerful antiseptics, so you would think it would be fine, but I don't know what kind of chemical it is. VInegar is a safe, non-chemical way to clean.

Haha, I just went to their site and read comments - one person says to spray it on dog bedding and it kills fleas, but don't spray it on the dog! LOL Also, someone used it on carpet where "the cat peed," although someone from the company responded that "this is not a recommended use of Lysol disinfectant." So many people say they can't find it - Family Dollar stores are mentioned as carrying it. I know it as a very old school product and could tell you a use for it they would probably say is not a recommended use in bold print!!

Anyway, I could not find an ingredient list. Oh, someone wrote it contains "Phenol" which is deemed toxic by the EPA so that's why the brown Lysol isn't sold in certain states. That seems odd. Ah, phenol is "carbolic acid." Gee, with so many other harmful things on the market you would think they wouldn't worry about a diluted form of that. It's listed as "Cancer effects: None." on the Agency for Toxic Substances website.

So maybe they reacted to that.

I am wondering if fish oil would be of any aid. It is recommended to those with arthritis to reduce inflammation. Something to discuss with the vet, perhaps.

BJM, I was wondering about that. I already add that to my raw foods that they eat. Maybe I should do more? I will ck with the vet tomorrow when I call.
