Rocky had a check up after his dental surgery and everything is looking good: his gums are healing very well, redness almost gone and he is feeling well.
Unfortunately his weight is up by 310 grams in a week, it is quite a lot.
One reason could be that he was fed much more before today's appointment than at a previous one as he was fasting for the surgery but it would only account for a little more on the scale.
The other reason is that I probably was giving him more food as I was feeding him very often trying to balance his BGs as his numbers are good.
On top of that he doesn't move at all as the weather is very hot and Rocky just sleeps in the garden all day.
So now I'm going to try to give him less food (frequent feeding did not serve us well I concluded) and test him to see how he's doing trying to manage everything with as little insulin as possible and less food.
That's the plan, see what occurs.

Good to hear Rocky is feeling well.

Less food or just less times a day? Why did frequent feeding not serve you well? "they" say it's better to give less food more times a day right than just 2 meals a day?

xx

Glad he's healing well. I named one of my first foster cats, Rocky :)

I feed mine 4x per day. I fiddled a lot trying to balance it all out too. For Tuck I found that feeding him with his shot then 3 hours later was the best pattern. I tried to get the second meal in just before the insulin really started bringing him down. I know exactly how you feel about overfeeding!

Ruby, in my quest to balance his BG as I'm doing a diabetic dance on low numbers I wanted to feed him more often thinking I was giving the same amount of food but it is so difficult to give really tiny amounts so probably the portions were just a bit too much and all in all I think I was giving more food as I was feeding him about 6 - 7 times in 24 hours.
So now I will try feeding at shot time and once in the middle of the cycle which will be 4x sticking to carefully measured portions. Yes, I think frequent feeding is better than 2 bigger meals per day.

Oh yes that is great Marlena, I do that with Baco too. 4 meals a day is a great way of feeding frequent but still managing the food/calorie intake.
Hope this works for you and Rocky Marlena.
I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that Rocky will get those beautiful numbers back.

Deb,
I also started feeding Rocky 3 hours after shot but he is so inconsistent with his reaction to insulin: on some days he starts reacting to it early but on most days his BG after 3 hours is higher than PS.
It is a balancing and guessing act!

Thanks honey.:cat:

Well it also depends on how much he's eaten and what type of food he has eaten.
If he eats a little more fat, or less, his BG will rise or will drop. And it can be influenced by so many other things, like the weather, and if he's active and stuff like that..
It's so hard to understand why our kitties react sometimes different than other times to insulin.

hahaha, I think Rocky and Baco would be real best friend if they would meet because Rocky sounds like Baco with that attitude ;)

Ruby, I always thought that fat is very important for cats and they need a lot of fat in their diet. At the moment his diet is very low carb, high protein and moderate fat. I only give him healthy fats, he gets fish oils as well but maybe I should reduce the fat content of his diet, have to think about that. I'm considering giving him a good kelp (seaweed) supplement, that might help with the weight loss. Or maybe just wakame (seaweed) as he likes it, I eat it myself as I really like Japanese food and cook miso soup for myself!

They do need fat ofcourse, but I've been seeing difference in Baco's weight since i've changed the fat % in her food.
She gets low fat (so around 6% to 10% fat in that raw food she gets) vs what she used to get, was 12% to 20% so that is better for her to get lower fat in her food.
She gets more grams of food now, so she thinks she is getting more food, but she is eating really nothing bad you know.. And it really helps I can tell.
You can check her weightloss at a tab in the SS from Baco.
