rock or roll?

This is a question about insulin. Do you rock the bottle back and forth a couple of times before inserting syringe. Or do you roll the bottle first? I had read somewhere that you were not to disturb the insulin as much as possible and that rolling would do this. So i rock it back and forth twice. IS this wrong? What do you all do?

I always roll....when you say rock do you mean shake?
I roll between my hands like making breadsticks, gently

No, not shake. I mean just gently rock back and forth (upside down and then right side up).

Funny, my 1st vet told me to turn it upside down slowly and back again, which I usually did for 3-5 times. Perhaps that is why it conked out so early.

I roll the insulin gently and then turn the bottle over a couple of times before inserting the needle.

I roll between hands and flip it over and roll again.

Is that a shake and a roll  ?

My vet showed me the rolling method so I do what he did.

The instructions that came with mine say to roll it slowly between your palms (bottle right side up) 20 to 30 times.

Hi,

I roll the vial between my hands very gently about 5 times. I have also rolled it the way you describe but I think the rolling between palms warms it up a bit in addition to distributing the insulin.

I gently roll the vial about 20 times until it feels a little warmer, then tip the bottle up and down very slowly and gently about 3 times.

Hi Lori,

The ProZinc package insert simply states to gently roll the vial. I think they should’ve coughed up the bucks for the extra ink to explain it better!

I roll the vile gently in a horizontal position about 10 times, then I gently invert the bottle back and forth (tilt it upside-down, then right-side-up...like a rocking boat) about 10 more times. Then I gently roll it a couple more times, then I draw the insulin immediately into the syringe. If you walk away from your mixed vile, even for a minute, you should re-mix it before drawing your dose.

The problem with mixing cloudy insulin is...if it's not mixed completely when you draw just one dose...you've now changed the concentration of the rest of the vile. If the vile is consistently mixed poorly...the remainder of the vile could be considerably weaker, or stronger, than intended.

Cloudy insulin, that isn't consistently mixed well...is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're gonna get!

Here's a link to the ProZinc website. Scroll down to the "How to fill the syringe" section, and click on the link to the video. In my opinion, this chick is rolling her vile too vigorously, and not long enough. She's also only rolling the vile while completely up-side-down...how the heck does that mix-in the "heavy" particles that settle at the bottom of the vile? I think gentle patience is required if you want your insulin to remain at the proper concentration. Maybe the ProZinc "video chick" is late for work?

I also found the following link, which explains it best. It's pretty much what I tried to describe to begin with...only better!

I hope this helps. :-D

I love this!

I gently roll the vial 10 times. I then peek to see how the mix is going. Then I turn the vial upside down and back again, gently, to complete the mixing - watching for any cloudy "sediment" still not mixed. As soon as the mix looks complete, I draw the dose. Repeat for each cycle.

Great info everyone! I guess i haven't been mixing it good enough. Now i know.

THANKS!

Oh, I'm not saying its right!

It looks like I cut off something on the storing instructions. I'll have to look at it when I get home.
