spot checking Robbie either am or pm and he continues to be in low 60's in am and never more than 80 at any given time depending on food intake etc. Has not had a BITE of dry in 10 days and VERY little in over 2 weeks.
He continues to seem better but is hungry quite often. No more large water intake - sadly his constipation is back a bit - but we are dealing with that. His asthma is also pretty bad right now so we are going back on the inhaled meds asap.

Thanks

I'm sorry Robbie is having other issues my kitty has asthma too. BUT It DOES sound like he is doing great with the diabetes. Removing dry food dropped our Trouble (GA) 100 point or more way back when he was alive. Good Job!

Hi,

Diet can make a huge difference in a newly diagnosed cat. My Big Kitty was diagnosed in January and after he got only 3 insulin shots and I put him on a low-carb wet diet, he went into remission for 8 months. What a wonderful time that was! Sadly, he had a relapse recently, despite my strict adherence to the diet, so my luck is over (for now, I hope).

Continue with the diet and hopefully your kitty will be OTJ forever!

Also, spread the word to your friends and family who have cats. I did that and converted several people with civie cats to wean them off of dry.

Best of Luck,

E

I'm a regular wet food Johnny Appleseed these days - spreading the word on wet food. I am hoping he won't relapse but checking him as often as possible to keep track.
thanks

So all that water drinking from the diabetes was really helping out with the constipation issue - soooo - I guess it was only a matter of time. Came home after being gone for 2 days (pet sitter 4x a day to check on them) to find him trying to "go" in every corner of the house, his "bed" just anywhere - throwing up and generally miserable. Got some laxtalose into him and some water and he finally went a bit - but now we are on high alert for this issue. I hope we find a balance some place. Now that he's back on the laxtalose and hairball remedy I'm going to start being better about checking his blood - gotta make sure at least the OTJ status remains.
Just wanted to check in.

Hi Ellen. Calliope had the constipation issues. I put a little miralax in her food daily and added water to the food, as well, after her last issue and we never had the problem again. Have you tried that with Robbie? After Robbie goes, you could start that regimen to see if it helps. I still put extra water in all my kitties' fancy feast with every meal.

Here's a sugarfree hairball remedy. I haven't used it and you might ask some folks here if they're familiar with it. I haven't looked at the other ingredients.

I'm tickled to death over Robbie's numbers! Hope the asthma issues clear up.

thanks for the info again - everyone's so helpful - Robbie continues to be in good shape glucose level wise - he's more active and seems pretty good - he's hungry ALL the time and that combined with the fact that he started drinking more again made me check him for 4 mornings straight (I'm not getting home till about 8:30-9pm from work these days so PM checks are more difficult) - he's mid to high 60's so that seems pretty good. Hope everyone else here is having much success with their fur kids -
Be well

Great to hear he is doing so well. If you want to pay it forward, there are several newbies on the board who could benefit from hearing your story of what a difference changing from dry to wet meant for your Robbie.

Thanks for the update on Robbie, I'm glad to hear that he's continuing to do well! :-D

As Sue said, there are newbies here that could really benefit from hearing your first hand story on changing diet from dry to wet and going OTJ quickly.....

where would be the best place for me to post the dry food story? I have now successfully converted 4 friends and a couple of people who see my vet are now trying the no dry food and my vet, who was supportive of the wet food only approach is now a total convert and it's the first step he takes - you all really opened his eyes - and I say you all because while I was the instrument it was all of you who did it.
Robbie went in to the vets on Saturday - mostly because he's lost more weight - he is now 17.5 lbs - so almost another full pound since about 45 days ago - the Vet was not concerned simply because he really looks so great and all my home testing has been perfect - totally normal numbers (for a non-diabetic cat) - but we did a blood work up anyway - glucose, liver, kidneys etc. etc. and he got a very complete exam. Everything came back PERFECT - ONE of the white blood cell "tracks" (I guess it breaks the white blood cell count down to specific tracks) was a tad low but the over all number was perfect so my Vet was pretty optimistic it's nothing - we are going to monitor his weight carefully. However, he seems to be clearly diet controlled completely regarding the diabetes - he eats about 3x the amount of wet food he used to - (so does his sister) but neither have gained weight and he's actually as I said lost weight.
His coat looks like I have him professionally groomed - what blows my mind is he used to have snarls all the time - awful knots I had to cut out - NOTHING now - silky smooth coat, luxurious hair - he's playful and happy - except he seems to be constantly hungry. the Vet suggests this is because his body is still calling out for all those carbs - I know the feeling - but several small wet food meals inbetween his breakfast and dinner seems to work.

Thank you all again - and let me know where to post the dry food warning story and I will happily do so - and if I am not here much please know I am out in the world spreading your wonderful advice to all - I've gotten on Facebook with it too and am converting friends there whenever possible.

Did they check thyroid?

Hungry all the time & weight loss can be symptoms of that.

Welcome back Ellen. Glad to hear Robbie is doing so well. There is no real place to post your story. Just check in every now and then, and when you see a newbie feeding dry, jump in!

Yes, thyroid was checked originally before the diabetes diagnosis and was just checked again - all fine -
Will look out for the dry food users and share my situation
