I don't now why I didn't think of this sooner. He's constipated. He's been lethargic all day and now I've seen him try and poop 3 times and can't - I thought he might be having an issue so I gave him some lactulouse earlier (despite what it might or might not do to his BG) we went out and came home to throw up on the floor (his dinner all watery) and he's in and out of the box. I'm trying to get our vet - I just cannot afford the ER Vet who is always NOT good with enemas for him. Wishing I knew how to give him one myself - I'd try it if I had any clue. He's miserable- it's Memorial day weekend and everyone is nuts out here where we live - driving like lunatics and the ER Vet is like an hour away - in best circumstance. I'm just terrified. Any thoughts?

How fast does it work? I don't know if any place is open locally that carries it but I'll call around. Might have a house call vet coming by waiting to hear back from her she was in an emergency.

CAUTION: If he's not passing anything through, giving a laxative could provoke vomiting, possibly damage.

Here's a bit of reading for you:
Feline Constipation

If he is passing some stool, a very, very cautious 1/8 teaspoon of Miralax added to soupy canned food twice a day has been successful for some folks.

Miralax is best used every day and will help soften the stools forming now, but probably will not soften the stuff that hes trying to get out. I would definitely get some for the future but it probably wont help now.

I might suggest a baby suppository however if there is a blockage and you force it in it could hurt him.. if you go that route I would very gently put it in and not force it at all, maybe even try cutting it in half? Also, be VERY careful and NOT get any suppository/enema product that has Phosphates in it.. like Fleets.

*****I just read BJM's post and I think you should follow his advice before doing any of what I am suggesting***

I hope you will get help for Robbie today. It sounds like he might get constipated a lot (?).

My vet prescribed 1/4 tsp. of Metamucil ,not flavored, of course, and not the sugary or sweet kind. At the health food store you can get powdered psyllium husks, which is what metamucil is made from--add it to WET food. I use turkey baby food--the kind without cornstarch added.

Give this two times a day. I actually only give it to my cat once a day. Since she's had diabetes she hasn't been as attracted to it, unfortunately, but it's worth a try. It has to be mixed into wet food, though, since hydration is important with psyllium...without adequate water, it can cause constipation.

I feel that probably once his current problem is solved, you should plan on giving him this mixture at least once a day. Poor Robbie , I really hope you get this taken care of !

Best of luck.

Thank you everyone -he used to get metamucil twice a day but we cut back because it sometimes put him off his food and with his insulin shots I needed to knwo he was eating if I had to leave the house. Was going to to miralax but he'd been so good with all the water he's still drinking he was pooping fine - he was just at the vet on Wed and everything felt fine (nothing in there that the vet could feel and he did feel) So since Wednesday he hasn't gone much - just some nuggets and now he's just not going at all (since probably Friday?) we've been working like crazy and I just didn't notice. I have a house call vet on the way here now - but all this info is very helpful and thank you.
