Risky -- updated SS as of 7:45

Setting up spreadsheets are so much easier than trying to figure out Risky. His numbers must be influenced by the infection and the medicine, but I don't understand why he went up after the shot this morning and why he stayed high all day.

The only inkling of an idea I have are the good numbers last night. What was different? Did he eat overnight? What did he eat? What did he eat today?

I hope you get more responses before you have to shoot, Martha. I am at a loss.

To me it looks like you have room to increase a little safely. But I also think you need to hold a dose for a few cycles to see where you are.

Would anyone out there be freaked by 2.2 or 2.4? If it were my cat with these numbers I’d prob try 2.4 if I were home to test him. And if the numbers didn’t go too low I’d hang with the dose maybe 3-4 days to see where you are.

Someone else should chime in here since I am no dosing expert, I just know what worked for us.

He is just such a complex cat, Donna. The vet had him up to 8 units. Martha lowered it and he went into DKA with an infection. Although it isn't in her ss, we tried lower doses and higher doses. I have trouble seeing any kind of a pattern we can latch onto. I hate seeing him in the high numbers.

Yeah, I see in the other threads about the infection and dka. The high numbers scare me too and my inclination is a little more insulin, esp since he is a dka cat. Is he totally on wet food now? And sub Q fluids?

I actually think the bloody UTI played a big part in the ketones. He didn't go into full blown DKA. The only good numbers he has gotten were when he wasn't getting any insulin or a reduced dose.

Can they throw ketones from reducing from 8 units to 2 units just from the shock to their system? He has been surviving the 8 units for a while now.

It is a mystery.

Since he tested negative for ketones yesterday would it be a major risk to lower a bit again? Just for PM shot to see if that changes anything? I know he doesn't like can food but I'm a little concerned about him only eating tuna. What about the dry EVO?

Since you are testing for ketones daily I think I would try a dose of 1.5 unit and test tonight so see if gets better numbers.

Keep testing for ketones.

Did he like any of the wet foods today enough to eat more wet than dry?

I will vote with Robin. She has more experience than I do and is better at dosing than I am. Try a lower dose tonight and get a ketone test. Does he eat overnight? Did he eat overnight last night? I would try to reproduce what happened last night in terms of food since you got lower numbers.

Martha, I know this is frustrating and scary. And that you are looking to us to have all the answers. But we don't. We just try things and hope we will hit on the right combination of insulin and food. He has several complex issues that we don't have a complete picture for. And Lord knows, we are not diabetes experts. I am beginning to think they aren't any. At least not PZI ones......
