I let Riley go outside for a little bit the other day and then I decided to check his blood sugar and it was 167 which is unusual because it's been ranging from 8o to 100. He hasn't had insulin in months because I've kept it under control with a great diet.
Then it came back down to the 120's. I did not know why It had gone up in the firstplace.
Then I let him go outside again just for a little bit and he came back in and I checked it again and it was 198. So I think that he's getting into some other food somewhere in the neighborhood that he shouldn't be eating.

I still have the Prozinc in my refrigerator but I don't want to give insulin unless I absolutely have to, I'm wondering what I should do. I know don't shoot under 200 so I dont wanna take any chances.
My main concern is how long does it take for something like that to go away after they eat something that's high in carbs,is it two days? 2 hours? Because it's been high all day and he hasn't eaten anything But soft food because I won't let him go outside anymore.

It can take up to several days for the effects of eating high carb kibble to work it's way out of the system, but it's one of those ECID kind of things. Cats that eat nothing but kibble and are then switched to low carb canned can take a week before seeing the full effect of the lower carb food

I wouldn't worry if it's just been today though

Time to keep Rusty inside only....or get him used to walking on a harness so you can keep him out of the neighbor's goodies!! :)

yes I've already thought about the harness. We have a big screened porch that my cats like to go lay in but he's the only one that wants to go outside and it drives me crazy but from now on no more.
Thank you so much for your advice I really really appreciate it.

Riley has been getting into the neighborhood goodies! I used to take my cat Cinnamon outside on a harness and leash. Marshmallow didn't like it much but I could walk around with Cinnamon for a little while.
