Just wanted to let y'all know that Riley had his iodine treatment done and finished on Wednesday. He came home and he is happy as can be, feeling great. He hasn't stopped purring. I'm so excited I did this treatment it was worth the money.
If anyone has a cat with hyperthyroidism, this is the cure and the amount of $ you pay for methamazole over a few years is about same for this and no more meds that have side effects.

Be alert for indicators that the insulin dose may need adjustment as the metabolism slows to more normal numbers. A cat can become hypOthyroid after the I-131 treatment.
Also watch for signs of renal disease, which may be unmasked by the treatment - increased urination, difficulty standing and walking from electrolyte imbalances - don't assume these are just from diabetes. I lost my civvie Emmy because I wasn't told what to monitor.
 
Riley was diagnosed with kidney disease after we got his thyroid under control with medication. He's in stage 1 which is good I ask the vet about the hypothyroidism and they said that we shouldn't have an issue but they wanted everything recheck in 30 days. Riley has been off insulin for almost a year now. He was only on insulin for 4 weeks when he was diagnosed and the vet told me that he would always be dependent on insulin but I got him off of it thanks to this website and soft food mainly.
I'm sorry for the loss of your pet that's horrible.
 
I'm so glad your kitty Riley has come home all happy and purry after the I-131! I had this done for my Tiger and it was worth every penny. She was one of the odd ones that did become mildly hypothyroid afterward, and eventually was in stage 2 CKD but both were managable and way better than dealing with pilling the tapazole and how sick it made her feel.

Your IM that did the treatment will likely want follow up bloodwork at 30 days and 90 days. You may want to join the Yahoo Feline Thyroid support group- I found it very informative and learn something new there all the time.

Hey Ruth just curious, what food did you give Tiger and did you find any dry food that is OK? Riley craves treats and won't eat freeze dried so he gets a few pieces of my other cats SO which is only dry food that does not raise his glucose but I know it can't be ideal for his needs. I have been experimenting with different can foods that I printed out a list that low in phosphorus and carbs he doesn't really like any of them but I'm doing my best.

He no longer takes insulin. His numbers stay 80s-90s
 
I also wanted to ask you if the hypothyroidism cause your kitty cats kidneys to go to stage 2 quickly I'm concerned with that.

Hi Dana, sorry for this late reply- for whatever reason I don't get email notifications...Neither of Tiger's vets, nor the IN Specialist ever pushed prescription foods, thank goodness.... They all emphasized that her diabetes came first so a low carb,high protein, low phosphorus wet food was premium. Also, the cat must eat! Tiger liked Purina DM until she got sick with pancreatitis;then I switched to Wellness Chicken; Wellness Core Turkey; Weruva Cats In The Kitchen assortments plus Tiki assorted canned foods. It is hard if your Riley is a dry food addict though. Can he have Fortaflora at all? I sprinkled it on Tiger's foods while I transitioned; she was fairly easy to transition to canned and liked Fortaflora so much that I just kept using it. Does he like parmesan cheese? I normally did not like to give fishy foods but in a pinch, Soulistic Triple Harmony and Weruva Pumkin Likin Chicken were favorites when she went off her foods.

Your vet will very likely be checking Riley's bloodwork at regular intervals, watching for hypoT. I think most on the Feline Hyper/HypoThyroid support list check every 3-4 months. And the chances are Riley won't go hypothyroid. I have to say, treating Tiger for hypothyroid was so easy--I only had to give her a chicken flavored compound once daily and she liked it. Tiger's creatine never went past 2.3, it was 1.6 prior to I-131. The IM had her on tapazole for a few weeks prior to the treatment then they did more bloodwork to check kidney function just before her procedure.

Thank you so much he defiantly likes the Wellness canned. I think I'm going to order a case of wellness core. Have you tried Avoderm?

Tiger was not fond of Avoderm; one of my kittens likes it though so at least it didn't go to waste.

Where do you live? I found a local pet store called Mud Bay here in Washington; if you purchase any food that your cat won't eat, they will give you a full refund, even if the can is half empty. Plus, if you are trying a new food, the first can is free. I can get cases of food at Chewy.com for less, but I love how this store operates.
 
I live in Myrtle Beach, SC. we have Petsmart, Petco, a pet supply company, but they don't seem to have what I want. I'm grateful that PetSmart has the wellness. We have been looking online and I found if you that I'm interested in. There's one store I haven't been to yet I'm going to go to this weekend I know we don't have a store like the one you're talking about that would be nice.
