Restlessness & confusion

hi everyone. My cat Zelda just was diagnosed on thursday with diabetes after a couple of stressful days at the vet. She is restless and wandering around here at home all day and seems to really get upset as she starts to fall asleep. She seems to walk into walls and things confused that solid objects are in her way. She just won't sleep. (And so neither have I to be honest.) The vet has told me multiple times that nothing else is obviously wrong with her per her tests and to just comfort her as we adjust to new food and meds. I'm wondering if anyone else experienced this restlessness? I can't find anything on google... and all information I was given says that lethargy would be a sign for concern on her new treatment.

No it has been ongoing, it is the symptom we noticed to bring her in to the vet. She also is only eating half of her wet food and outright ignoring it after that often walking thru the bowls to get away from either us or it... not sure. Called vet and they said she needs insulin, so we gave her so far 3 doses (all exactly 12 hours apart) of 2 units of vetsulin. She also is on an appetite stimulant the vet sent us home with.

That REALLY sounds like she could have extremely high blood pressure. Is there a cat specialist vet near you? Often cat specialist vets are a lot more knowledgeable about cat medical issues; testing for blood pressure in a cat isn't straightforward since the stress of being at a vet can cause false high readings.

Are her pupils dilated? Do they adjust to light changes?

I don't have results available for BP so I have to assume they didn't check. Her restlessness didn't worsen, it's been about the same but yes that is the type of appetite stimulant. We were able to get her to sleep for 3 straight hours finally last night. Would high stress be the cause? And yes her pupils do react to light and are not dialated.

High stress? You mean from going to the vet? That should subside maybe a day later at the most. No this doesnt "sound" like stress.
Have you called the vet and reported this behavior?

Yes and the vet said keep a close observation and to keep giving her the medicine as prescribed. I wasn't sure if the behavior had to do with high sugar still. Her numbers were at 318 though with the vet blood test and she did not have ketones when her urine test came back, just glucose present. I wish I knew more or had physical test reults to share. ):

318 is high but we see much higher here so thats kinda good.
Eh we understand I wouldnt know what to do with lab results either. Its all Greek to me. :p

As a precaution I'd suggest getting Zelda in to see the vet as soon as you possibly can to check her blood pressure and eyesight. Her behaviour is very strange. Changes like that don't usually appear by magic. Maybe seek a second veterinary opinion?

You must be very worried, and I'm sorry I can't think of anything concrete that might help.

Had a quick scout online:

Feline Cognitive Dysfunction (FCD)

Anything familiar in the above?

Hi there! The emergency vet suggested not to return today and to continue to monitor. I was able to get Zelda to eat a little more today which was excellent. We replaced her water bowl with a cat water fountain and she drank more than she had over the last several days. The restlessness didn't completely subside, she still sometimes wakes up as if in fear and then wanders around. She hasn't walked through her food and water yet since my last post. She came over when called this afternoon and groomed herself and the other cats. Though she didn't really feel like playing, she did reach out and reacted to the laser pointer when we were excercising the other cats. She did sleep for a few hours throughout different points of the day as opposed to the last few days in spans of like 20-30m before what appears to be fear/restlessness kicked in. So there is marked improvement. The vet is concerned she is experiencing something like stress induced hyperglycemia which wasn't mentioned by our regular vet. We have another check up on Monday during office hours I scheduled per the advice here.

Hi Marina,

I'm really glad to hear that Zelda's doing better today - for both of you! :)

Be sure to let us know how she gets on at the vet tomorrow. I hope they'll be able to identify the root of the restlessness and recommend something to help.
