Respiratory Issues? How do you know?

Let me start by saying I am completely ignorant on this subject and hope my questions make sense.

Our first cat, Smokey, used to sneeze. My mother-in-law said cats aren't supposed to sneeze unless they're sick. We lost him to feline leukemia that he was born with.

Well, sometimes Hershey (diabetic) sneezes. I can't relate to just times when he has his nose where it doesn't belong.

And, Oreo (non-diabetic) sneezes off and on - some days more than others. I'd attribute his to him being underfoot while Doug is renovating (We keep him out as much as possible.), but he was doing it before that, but he does have his nose anywhere he can - the dustier the better!

(Maybe unrelated) I've been having trouble getting him to eat. He'll woof down the food, then the next meal or two snubb it. I've tried elevating his bowl and most of the have to start off spoon feeding him. But, the very next meal he may INHALE it! (That's what it sounds like!!) We've switched his food from Wellness to Friskies pate and even mix up the flavors (sometimes combining them) and just when we think we're past the issue - BAM! it's back...

And, now, sometimes he makes a sound - I wouldn't call it a cough (but I've never heard a cat cough, so what do I know?) - it happens most often after he eats. It sounds like a cross between a hairball and a wheeze. Sometimes something will come up, sometimes not. Jessica said she thinks he has reflux, but I don't know what it is. I do know that Thursday night, it was scary feeling so helpless when he did it.

Any idea what's going on? I know living together that if one of them catches something, there's a good chance the other one will. I thought about taking them to the vet, but it doesn't sound like I'm giving her much to go on. Any ideas on what might be going on or what I should be looking out for?

Thanks for letting me pick your brain!!

Libby,

I've had an URI epidemic blow through my house. It was HORRIBLE. The sneezing, running eyes, just like you'd see w/ 2-legged children... a whole classroom of them! It was AB for everyone, and time. They felt miserable and the cleaning of things they sneezed out on EVERY surface in the house was hell for me!

I thought you'd already nailed it on the head... the construction dust, although if it started earlier, I don't know. Other than hairballs, I've not had a cough that circulated. Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on it.

I dont want to scare you but I would go to Vet asap. At least an xray of lungs is in order. I had that same feeling when Waldo "coughed" it turned out he had a heart condition. I'm not saying that is what your kitty has, he might have asthma. Both can be dealt with but they need to be diagnosed first. The sooner the better.
All my best,
jeanne

my cats sneeze now and again, but they've been checked and have no respiratory issues, so i guess they are simply just sneezing, my one cat coughs when she has a hairball coming sometimes she'll cough 2 days before that bugger comes out :-D .... Cats can be prone to respiratory infections so i would definately go to the vet to make sure.

Any eye discharge from any of them? Any gook in the ears, like brown wax? I have a civie with allergies and possible herpes virus and she sneezes a lot. Also has the weepy eyes and when her allergies get bad her ears seem to get dirtier inside. But I know what I am dealing with, she was confirmed by vet to have allergies. Sometimes when she eats she will make a wierd noise with her mouth but not quite a coughing noise.
I also have a civie with heartworms. Now she does not really sneeze nor does she really cough. She has had episodes where her breathing was obviously labored and almost makes a honking noise. Again, I took her to the vet and had lung x-rays done so I know what I am dealing with.
I guess what I am saying is that since it seems to concern you, you may want to make a trip to the vet just so you can know what you are dealing with and how to deal with it. Hope that helps. Good luck!

No eye/ear discharge and it's not happening regularly. Guess I'll start trying to make notes of what's going on when I observe sneezing & the hairball/wheezing and see about getting an appointment with the vet. Was hoping not to need to see her again until Hershey had some consistently good numbers to support me not handling the FD the way she said to.

Thanks, ya'll!!

Sneakers sneezes infrequently. And has a drippy nose sometimes.
Other than that I have no clue. Sorry.

THANK Y'ALL SO MUCH for your replies! Doug took Oreo to the vet this morning. Our vet wasn't working, but Doug really liked the one they saw. He said she was all for the home-testing, all wet food, etc, and said we had done a good job getting Oreo's weight down. (He was at 15-lb Nov, 2011 and told to lose 3-lb. His current weight is 11.5-lb!)
She said height, weight, etc - he looked "perfect." :-D

She said his chest sounded clear and she didn't think he was having respiratory issues. She said since we had had such a mild winter that she had seen several cats present with the same symptoms. She said something about the length of time shedding their winter coat (remember this is from her to Doug to me to you, so not admissible in court ;-) ) and that he has hairballs that he can neither pass nor bring up. She gave us tuna flavored Laxatone to give three times a week. (btw - Oreo HATES it!) She told Doug we could use it for Hershey, too, until Doug read the ingredients (GO, DOUG!) and reminded her that Hershey (who, in her defense, she's never seen before) is diabetic. She said she'd research and see what she could come up for him. :o At first, I was a little miffed that Doug had shared so much of Hershey's diabetic business with her, but he said she received it all well and had nothing bad to say. So, maybe we'll try to see her, again??

Sorry to ramble on - I mainly just wanted to let y'all know that all appears well with Oreo (respiratory wise) - THANKFULLY! - and thank y'all for your help!

Libby - Hershey and Oreo, too!
