Okay, I am completely overwhelmed when looking at your spreadsheet... that cat is getting 6 units of Levemir??? What insulin has he been on previously and how long has he been on Lev?

What food are you feeding Bagheera? And how big is he? Any other health issues.

I am concerned that you are not getting any blood tests in the middle of the cycle, therefore you have no idea how low this cat is going on the Lev. We test to find the low point, known as the nadir, in order to be sure that the cat is staying safe and also to determine if a dose change is needed. I have NEVER heard of a cat having 6 units of Levemir, and frankly and surprised that he is okay. Each day that you overdose a cat on Lev, the bigger the risk. Levemir, like Lantus, is a depot insulin, which means that it builds up in the system over time. (5 days or so, usually).

Give us some more information, and we will get you on the right track
 
I'm afraid I can offer you no dosing advice since several very wise humans my mom included have told you repeatly that your human and the white coats are dosing you incorrectly for the insulin you're on but you refuse to make them listen.

Having read your blog, and other posts, I will put it to you very plainly : you are willingly, and in full knowledge of what you are doing, overdosing your cat.

I am not surprised you hide behind the persona of your cat, rather than posting as yourself. The whole thing is rather sick. I feel so sorry for that poor kitty, and frankly wish I knew who/where you are so I could report you.
 
posting this as a Moderator: please, no personal attacks on FDMB. If you can't be constructive, it's best to just not post at all.

posting this as a Levemir user: while most cats do not need 6 units of Levemir, it is certainly not unheard of. If you have NEVER seen a cat needing 6 units, you can look at my Jazzy's spreadsheet. There are others. Spend some time on the Lantus Tight Regulation forum and you will find them.

Also, while most people on FDMB do not use sliding scales for Levemir, that doesn't mean it can't work for some cats. There is more than one way to get the job done. Bagheera's numbers don't look that bad to me, especially for a cat that eats dry food. It might be possible to tighten things up with a little more work, but Bagheera seems to be in a fairly healthy range most of the time. To imply abuse seems out of line to me. Bagheera's numbers are better than many on this forum.

Absolutely.

Does any kitty besides this one use a slidinng scale with Lev on the FDMB?
I don't know for sure but my guess is no.

Perhaps it can.

Nobody on the FDMB is qualified to answer that question with absolute certainty.

Does anyone who is a member if FDMB have the right to ridicule or criticize another member and how they treat FD just becsuse it is different or hasn't been used during the time you've been a member?

On the other end of the internet connection, there's a diabetic cat and a bean who doesn't have all the answers either.

If you can help, great. If you can't, thats fine too. But telling somebody they are "sick" and they are purposefully overdosing their cat is not okay. IMHO.

My cat got about 150 shots of insulin. Every one if them was shot into muscle in his back legs. I was told by well-meaning members that "you can't do that. Insulin has to be given sub- q!"
HAS TO BE. But they were 100% wrong about that. It worked for my cat. It worked really well. I almost quit the board due to those people telling me that I was doing this WRONG.

That was three years and 12 thousand posts ago.

Civility is a good thing.
 
I apologize for my tone.

However, I am still very concerned that this cat owner is not doing any testing between shots, despite being told the importance of getting nadir numbers for over a year. No one knows how low that cat is going between those 6 unit doses.

My concern is that someone will copy this cat's dosing, and this owner's method (or what we know of it). To just ignore what I am worried about and not say something would indeed be irresponsible on my part.

But again, I do apologize for crossing a line and touching a nerve.

Yes sliding scales do work with Levemir use a small one myself.

My problem with this particular poster is that for over a year I've personal watched numerous very experienced care givers here offer help with this cat. And it has been ignored. I personally have tried to offer advice. Nothing anyone has offered has been accepted or even considered by this care giver there for I have nothing else to offer.

Here is a link you might find useful, of glucose reference ranges. They are based on the research work of Roomp and Rand, who are mentioned in the Lantus Tight Regulation forum. The Tight Regulation protocol is based on their research, plus our experiences here.

Most important is the renal threshold - this is the level at which glucose is spilled in the urine. If there is enough glucose that it is spilling in the urine, damage to other organs may be happening. This, obviously, could shorten your life. You can check some of these numbers in the Roomp and Rand article, as well as the Merck Veterinary Manual, which is available for free, online. The Merck Manual of Pet Health Online is available free too. Lots of good info in the Mercks - tell your person. (Me, I got a hard copy of the Vet Manual, thinking I would study Vet Tech. That didn't happen for various reasons.)
 
I'm not sure Bagheera is even asking for advice. Maybe, but this reads more like just an update to me. That's just my opinion.

I think what people don't realize is that if the mods are in a thread, it is because someone called our attention to it. Someone reported this thread (and it was not Bagheera who reported it). We step in to try to prevent things from degrading to a point where someone either gets in trouble or says something they will regret.
