In the last 10 days Doodle's renal values have deteriorated.
BUN went from 38 to 52, his CREAT went from 2.8 to 3.9 and his PHOS went from 3.0 to 5.0 :( :(
His USG went from 1.030 to 1.023

His Blood Pressure was 220 and his sodium is now higher than ever at 171.

The good news is that his potassium is up from 2.8 to 4.1

I'm putting him back on low phos food...
My vet is speaking with an IM vet tomorrow to help her come up with a plan of what meds he should be on.
I'm very worried --- this seems like quite a big deterioration in only 10 days!

(((( michelle )))) ,

sorry to hear doodle is not doing well.

have you tried azodyl ?
they have a good explanation at their site
http://www.vetoquinolusa.com/pages/pro_azodyl.html

our IM specialists says that she has had some amazing results with animals ( both cats and dogs) w/severe renal issues using this.

I have started using in on my Wolfie who has CRF for 6/7 years.
there are other members on the board who also use it.

worth a try ?

sending healing prayers for Doodle.

Thanks Cheryl and Linda.
I'm a little freaked out... My civie, Abbey, has been so stable for the last 2 years that I guess I never considered his values could go up so quickly.
I have been reading Tanya's site as well as the felinecrf one for the last couple of weeks, despite the fact that my vet has been insistant on this not being a renal issue. (until now) His numbers had been creeping up for the last year and each USG has been less concentrated...- I just wasn't convinced that she was right. *sigh..*
I was actually trying to convince myself that his blood pressure was elevated because he was hyperthyroid (he's not) and his renal values were weird because he was dehydrated or something... I just wanted it to be something I could fix.
I know you both understand this sick feeling I have in the pit of my stomach...

I asked my vet about Azodyl yesterday (as well as calcitrol) and she is asking the IM about it today.
Do you give it in capsule form Cheryl? or do you sprinkle it on the Wolfie's food?

This jump is suspicious and not typical of CKD (CRF). Did he have a recent urine culture? Anything else going on? Eating very well, no changes in hydration status? Has he ever had an ultrasound of his kidneys? (You've probably told me this before, sorry.)

PS Sometimes the USG will jump around. If you can catch the first pee of the morning and test that, you'll have your most accurate result.

I give the azodyl in the capsule.
It must be kept in the fridge

Wolfie's gut was a little overwhelmed by it, so we started at 1/2 capsule. I plug it with some cheese .
some sprinkle it on food. but the company does not advise that.

Meowzi also uses it. I'll pm WCF for you .

I'm glad Jess is posting. It sounds like a great idea to make sure something else isn't going on.
A personal example -- Winnie's renal values would jump up during a CP flare.

healing wishes continue to be send for Doodle.

We heart Doodle .

Thanks again Cheryl ! I just ordered some Azodyl and I'm sure Doodle will thank you for the cheese plug idea :-D
And Thank you for the vibes Jayne! Always appreciated.

I too am glad Jess is posting!! (as always)
Choy-Foong just asked me if anything else was going on as well - had we ruled out UTI/kidney infection etc... and no, I'm embarrased to say we didn't.
No one even suggested we look at anything else .

His appy is a little low today - but hasn't really been off. He seems pretty good actually - playing at night, eating normally, lounging on his back with his feet in the air - he certainly doesn't seem to be feeling any pain. He's just drinking like crazy!
He's never had an ultrsound on his kidneys.

I started him on 0.625mg of amlodipine today and we go next week for a BP recheck and plan to rerun his labs then as well . Is there a specific type of urine culture urinalysis I should ask to have run? Should I do it earlier than next week?

Thank you for helping us so much Jess - I truly appreciate it!!

i'd have a C & S and a U/A done with urine collected via cystocentesis.
If there is an infection, the sooner you catch it the better.

if you can swing it, an U/S that would be a good next step. They can really get a good look at the kidneys and the whole abdominal region to make sure there is nothing else going on in there.
( were any reg. xrays done? )

assuming with all the other bw CBC was done? how did that look?

I know someone else suggested making sure bw was sent out , as sometimes in house machines are more prone to error. a good idea to see what they have done and have they next batch sent out.

I'm glad WCR is good in spite of all that is going on.
continued healing wishes for Doodle.

thanks again Cheryl!
No x-rays were done. Just bloodwork, BP and a USG.
I'll have them do CBC/Chem/Lytes and a C & S and U/A done by cysto. next week - sent to Idexx
--- his poor little bladder has been poked so many times the last couple of months -- I'm sure it's irritated.
I'll ask about getting the ultrasound. I know they have one because they let me help when they did one a few days ago on his unfull bladder (for the cysto)

I'm getting a bit frustrated at this point, that I, in all my ignorance, am having to guide my vet in what to do.
I guess I should be grateful that she is willing to work with me -- and I'm definitely grateful that I have the people on this board to help us!!!
