I know I've read that cats have to be OTJ for 14 days to be considered in remission but I'm hoping my kitty is on his way to that! Ive been slowly decreasing his insulin (caninsulin) for the past few months from 7 units BID down to .25 units and changed him to a low carb diet! (EVO 95%) I have not had to give him insulin since April 19th in the morning! :) 72 hours no insulin!! I have still been checking his numbers a few times a day. What does everyone think of these numbers? They are normal range right?

April 19

10:30am 10.1 (181.8) (.25 units)
2:30pm 5.2 (93.6)
10:30pm 4.6 (82.8)

April 20
10:30am 6.2 (111.6)
10:30pm 6.4 (115.2)

April 21

10:30am 5.4 (97.2)
3:30pm 5.9 (106.2)

Fantastic job! :thumbup And caninsulin is one of the harder insulins to get cats regulated on, much less into remission. It definitely looks like your kitty is trying hard to become a diet-controlled diabetic. :-D Keep us posted how it goes over the next couple of weeks and if he stays under ~150, then I think you might have a success on your hands. :YMHUG:

It's looking good.. We want 14 days of under 130. You might want to help out his pancreas by feeding frequent small meals instead of large ones. Let us know how it goes. If she starts to sneak up again you could try micro dosing.. There are a few doses less than 1/4unit you can squeeze out of the syringe.

Keep updating the 1st post and we'll be there at the finish for the party! (I'm an optimist!)

Fingers crossed!

Watch for any signs of infection - dental, bladder, & respiratory - since those can cause relapse quickly.

It's been one week now without insulin! :) He did have one day where his sugars were higher (9.8 / 176.4) but I did not give insulin and his sugar went down by itself. He is usually in the 4 - 5 range now. Hoping this lasts!!

The only thing I am concered about is even with better BG levels his furr still seems to be very stringy looking. :(

You can help him by using a boar bristle brush to groom him. The bristles will help distribute the oils. Wash the brush between uses.

If he'll tolerate it, you might give him a bath after brushing him first to remove loose fur.

Re: Remission?! 2.7 without insulin - too low?

So I stil have not had to give Kittycat insulin since the morning of April 19th! :) I checked his sugar tonight at usual time and it was 4.0. I fed him his usual amount of food and then decided to check his sugar again before I went to bed. (I was curious what his sugar is a few hours after eating since I have only been checking every 12 hours before feeding.) His sugar is 2.7. (3 hours after eating). Is this a good number or should I be concered he is going too low even without insulin?

I think that converts to 48mg/dl.
My cat has hit 48 once since being OTJ but one of my civies regularly tests in the 40s.

I find that the bg does drop a few hours after eating so that's probably why you're seeing a difference from your regular testing numbers.

May 2nd would make it 14 days without any juice (insulin). We usually celebrate with a party and pictures of your cat. I think Rusty has taken over the head chef duties since Mannie passed away.

We usually cheer folks on everyday as they are on the OTJ trial, but I don't think anyone realized you were trying an OTJ trial. Here are a few cheers for your Kittycat.

Go Kittycat Go! Go all the way to OTJ!

Day 11 sounds good!!!

Normal cats are around 40-130 so i wouldn't worry.. And it's not so much of a concern when not on insulin.

Ok good to know. I have only been testing twice a day usually (before meals) so I was suprised to see his sugar that low a couple hours after eating. Is it still really important to feed a cat at the same time every day if they aren't on insulin?

I have seen a few people use the word "civies" when talking about their cat ... What exactly does that mean? lol

Oh WOW! CONGRATULATIONS! I didn't get to DANCE with your OTJ trial!!! WOOT WOOT!!!!

Civie = "Civilian" or non-diabetic cat.... :-D I wondered about that at first too.....same with 'condo' aka 'thread' or 'post'. I get confused easily....

BIG HUG! GOOD JOB!!!!
