May and I had been doing well with the insulin shots and everything was under control until last week. She stopped eating and was just a fur lump. Diagnosis is pancreatitis. I am very worried because she has barely been eating even with the prescription food. Her blood glucose was in the normal range and I had stopped the shots when she didn't eat. Today I go for another glucose test. I am going out of town on July 1st and am frantic to get her stabilized before I leave. For those of you who have gone through this any words of advice? encouragement?

Judy,
Pancreatitis is very painful, so just like us, we don't feel like eating if in pain.
There are 3 things you will need to give your cat.
1. Get buprenex for the pain. don't take NO for an answer. Demand a pain med for your cat.
2. Pepcid AC regular strength 10mg. Cut the tabs into 4 pieces; each will be 2.5mg. Give your cat 1/4 about 30min before the am shot meal, and it will help to settle the stomach and your cat will be more likely to eat.
3. Sub Q fluids. If you have not given your cat fluids, no problem. Get a kit from your vet and have the vet or vet tech show you how. You are already an expert at measuring insulin and giving shots, so you will have no problems with giving fluids. The fluids flush toxins from the body.
there is one more thing that you can talk to you vet about getting..... get a vial of B12 and give your cat B12 shots weekly. It seems that cats who get pancreatitis seem to be prone to flares, so your cat may have the problem more often. One of my cats had horrible flares but once I started giving her B12 shots every week, 25u, she had only one minor flare. The B12 will take care of the pancreas inflammation.
When your cat is in pain, it's most important to have your cat eat, especially if diabetic. By holding off the insulin shots, and the cat not eating, you have 2 of the 3 things needed to end up with a very sick cat and a trip to the ER. Post if your cat is not eating and get help.
