Hello, I've scoured several FD info pages and forum threads. Can someone please point me in the direction of text on remission and 'honeymoon'? Specifically looking for what are the requirements to consider a cat in remission (x # of days with no insulin)? Is there a common time frame that honeymoons are more likely to happen (between months 2 and 3, or after switch to wet food only)? Is a honeymoon denoting remission is more likely, should I get my hopes up? Thanks for the direction and advice!

Here is the definition of remission: "14 days without insulin and normal blood glucose values. Most remission cats are able to stay in the normal range all of the time (50 to 80 mg/dl), although there are a few cases of sporadic higher and lower BGs. Don't stop feeding low-carb and try to avoid cortisone if possible.

Although Toby has seen some lower numbers which is good, he is not ready to be off of insulin yet. There are a couple of dosing methods in the Prozinc forum. You might want to read about them and chose one to follow. The dosing methods will tell you how and when to reduce the insulin dose down to the point when you can start the 14 day OTJ (off the juice) trial without insulin. Of note, a cat needs to be regulated before remission will happen. Our goal here is a remission that lasts.

As for the statistics, our saying is ECID - every cat is different. In general, the sooner you can get a cat regulated, the greater the chances of remission. But many of us have not known how long our cat was diabetic before diagnosis, which adds to that time. Also, there are underlying conditions that can cause insulin resistance and those also need to be treated if they exist in a cat. Even something as simple as needing a dental and inflamed gums can make regulation harder. As for the question about switching to low carb wet food, again, I have seen a wide range of time frames. Some almost immediate, some not so much.

I’m tagging someone experience with prozync @Suzanne & Darcy

but take a look at Bobo’s spreadsheet. After 2 weeks of no insulin he was officially in remission. I just peaked at yours and I’d suggest not skipping insulin just yet. I’d go down to .1 first and then you may have to go to 1 drop before going OTJ

Thank you Ale, very helpful. I was going off of if under 150 don't shoot, but I see that doing microdoses would help longterm toward remission. I'm scared of a hypo and days I work outside of my house I don't want to risk him being alone and having one. I'll read more about PZ smaller doses, etc. Welcomingmkre thought here. Thanks again!

Not sure if it’s the same with prozinc but we did the 2 weeks at .1 and the idea was that you want to see green only, basically you want the cat to stay in the lower of the normal range 80-120. Ideally under 100 so you wouldn’t see any blues. I was posting on the Lantus forum every day and getting dose guidance. Let’s see what @Suzanne & Darcy would say since I think the prozinc forum is not as active

All the Prozinc dosing methods we have suggest reducing the dose by 0.25 units at a time, so that would mean going from 0.5 units, to 0.25 units.

When you did your 2 weeks at .1, we're you home monitoring for hypo? My work schedule shifted for several days and I didn't give him insulin when he was under 100 because I couldn't be here to monitor for hypo. We're a couple days of green now but wondering if I need to try to work remotely for 2 weeks to have him at .1 or what to do next. He hasn't has a dose for several days and it's going alright but I dont want to mess him up by not giving him more, and also wondering with his current trends if he needs it.

I was at home but when you shoot lower preshots, they usually stay in flat numbers. If you look at Bobo’s spreadsheet he never went under 70. I understand it can be nerve wrecking. I think it was actually 1 week and 2 weeks for the OTJ trial. What about giving a drop instead of .1? He’s staying in the greens now. If he goes up back into the blues you have to start counting the 7 days over again. I was posting on the Lantus forum every day and getting guidance there @Suzanne & Darcy
