Well it has been 40 hours already since his last shot and I can't get a number high enough to actually give him one. Is it possible that he is already in remission?

Re: Remission already? Is it possible?

It's very possible, I stopped giving Dusty insulin after just one week plus wet low carb food. Hope it happens for you! flip_cat

You're dosing isn't to high? Might have bring him down slowly...

Re: Remission already? Is it possible?

Yep, it's possible! If you can go for 14 days without shots and the numbers stay mostly between 40-120 with the majority in double digits, then we say your kitty is Off The Juice (OTJ) and they're considered diet-controlled diabetics. You're doing a great job and don't worry if he ends up still needing a spot of insulin. Some cats fail their first couple of OTJ trials but then come back stronger. That's what we want: a strong remission.

It looks like you guys might be on your way! You'll be able to see in the next few days if his numbers remain in the 100s or continue to drop further on their own. Otherwise, I might suggest a token dose of insulin (like a drop) to nudge those numbers down a bit further, if necessary.

Re: Remission already? Is it possible?

We'll be keeping our fingers and paws crossed for Cuddles. We want to see the majority of the test numbers under 100.

OTJ Trial instructions

Here are the instructions for an OTJ trial:
  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas). The morning test is now called the AMBG. The evening test is now called the PMBG.
  • If your cat is green (0-99 mg/L human meter, 0-130 mg/L pet meter, 0-5.5 mmoL) at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If the numbers are blue (100-199 human meter, 130-230 pet meter, 5.5-11 mmoL), feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. Food raises BG's. So if the number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!
  • After 2 weeks, if everything is looking good, we have a party! And boy, do we party hearty.

Sometimes, the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support by starting the cat with a tiny dose of insulin again. I had to do that with Wink. We simply start the cat back on a tiny dose of insulin to support the pancreas with healing for a bit longer. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to be safe now then sorry later that you rushed it. With just a little more time we will probably get that strong remission we are looking for.

Re: Remission already? Is it possible?

Looks like the answer is no. Just got a 279.

The answer isn't "No". The answer is "Maybe not yet".

Keep an eye on the numbers and see if you get a lower BG a couple hours after feeding. That would indicate that the pancreas is trying to do the job, even if it might need a tiny bit of help with small doses of insulin.

Looks like he's coming back down quite nicely for you on the .25u. :thumbup Even if he's not in remission, he did just get a dose decrease, so that's always worth celebrating! party_cat

yep lets give 0.25 around 3 days and see how it goes. You don't see any blue or green by end day 3 (cycle 6) go back to 0.5. Likely the dose decreases were too sudden and close together and his pancreas couldn't pick up the slack that fast.
