Remission again

Squeaker has gone into remission again after about 6 weeks. I wonder if development of pancreatitis is why he relapsed and also if I need to be more conscious of the possibility of chronic pancreatitis leading to periodic relapse.

I use the Relion meter and the vet wanted to run concurrent tests of my meter vs their meter. Not surprisingly, they told me that I needed to buy an Alpha Trak and of course they could order it for me. They kept insisting telling me that sometimes the difference between my meter and theirs was close then at the next test the difference was considerable. I think they were just trying to "make a sale" so I told them that between managing all the health issues with vet visits and medications (RCM, CRF, and seemingly periodic diabetic relapse) I simply couldn't afford an Alpha Trak.

Anyway, the good news is for now we are again in remission.

Good job on getting Squeaker into remission again. :RAHCAT

It's going to be tough to keep him in remission if he has chronic pancreatitis. You'll probably want to keep up testing fairly frequently.

Yes, pancreatitis can cause a diabetic cat in remission to fall out of remission and need insulin again. I remember reading that in one of the vet journal articles, but can't remember which one.

Good for you for passing on the Alphatrak meter. Next time, ask your vet if they'll give you the test strips for the same price as the Relion meter you use and sell you the Alphatrak meter for the same price as a Relion meter. I bet not, but maybe that will help them realize the exorbitant cost of the Alphatrak and it's test strips.

One thing recommended for cats with chronic pancreatitis flare-ups are weekly cyano-b12 shots to help reduce inflammation. You might want to check with your vet to see if this is something you can start.

CyanoB-12? He also developed anemia as a result of CRF. I thought that MethylB-12 was what they needed. This is something that I had planned to discuss with the internist.

Methyl-b12 is good for CRF and neuropathy and is usually oral. Cyano-b12 is good for inflammation and is usually in (pink) shot format.
