Relion Prime accuracy?

I recently got a Relion Prime for Mary as the strips are only $9 for 50 and I'd had good results with Relion in the past. I am a type 1 diabetic and have been using my spare One Touch Mini but the strips are expensive so I wanted to get something cheaper. Anyway today since I was switching to thd Relion Prime meter I tested using both meters and also my regular One Touch Ultra which I know is accurate and consistent with my A1c results. I tested before dinner/PMPS (#1) and then afterwards (#2) so I got a low and a high number to compare. See numbers below. So for md the results were very consistent and I'd say the meter was accurate. However for Mary it seems to be reading much lower (approx 50-75 points) so I'm thinking I should stick with the old meter. I may try changing the battery or replacing thd meter at Walmart to see if that gives better readings. What have other people found re how the Relion Prime compares with their previous meters?

I, too, am interested in the Prime. I might get one this weekend and do double tests over the course of the week to see.

I think FD's problem with the TRUE generic brands are the higher numbers do not read correctly. While they might have cheaper strips (EVERY vampire clubbers dream :lol: ) if they are not correct it doesn't matter.

I have another order coming from ADW for my micro this week so should have plenty of time to test.

If we get our techies working on this they can give us an idea of how 'off' the prime might be and if it is safe for us to use it.
 
Any updates on this? Have you guys done more testing to see how it compares? It seems to have a much more user friendly display so I have been considering switching to it from the Relion Micro.
 
I was hoping some more people would post. I haven't been using it for Mary as it seemed to be reading so low for her. If other people find it accurate for their cats I'll try swapping it out for a different meter in case I have a bad one.
 
i've been using it now for a couple weeks.

For my foster kitty it seems to read a bit lower than my Flash, but within the 20% allowable variance.

For Mousie it pretty much reads the same as the Flash, number for number
 
I use the Relion Ultima but thought I'd try the Prime because of the cheaper strips. The Prime was consistently lower than the Ultima, but not by the same amount each time. I tried an Arkray Vital as well, same thing, consistently lower than the Ultima but not by the same amount. I've tested the Ultima to two different Vet's meters as well - I know one was the Alpha Trak, I don't know what the other one was... My Ultima was 50ish points lower than the unknown meter and 20 points higher than the Alpha.

I think the bottom line is, you have to pick a meter and stick with it since we're really looking for trends over actual numbers.... I was driving myself nuts testing the Ultima to the other meters and wondering which was right. Plus with the allowable variance, even the same drop of blood and same meter can produce different numbers.

Now, with that said... the new Vet that I saw the other day has suggested that I switch to the One Touch Ultra. She said that one is supposed to be really accurate - according to her research, and pretty compatible to the Alpha Trak which she said is the "gold standard" in meters. I haven't checked it out yet.
 
I find the One Touch Mini a bit easier to use for Mary because it is smaller so I can easily get the blood drop from her ear to the strip in the meter. It still uses the Ultra strips. On both me and Mary I've found the results accurate compared to the One Touch Ultra which is the main one I use for myself and that is accurate compared to my A1c readings. For Mary I compared my One Touch Mini meter with the vet's and it was pretty close / just about 20-30 points lower than their AlphaTrack. The issue is that the One Touch Ultra strips are very expensive at approx $1.30 each :shock:

The Relion Prime seemed very accurate and giving consistent readings to the One Touch for me so I think its a good Meter for humans. However it was giving significantly lower readings vs the One Touch for Mary and I was getting fairly different readings from the same drop of blood when I retested. Since I haven't seen anyone posting who found the Prime accurate I think I'll try the Relion Ultima. The strips are more expensive but still a lot less than the One Touch and I'm nearly through the last batch I bought. Or I suppose I could use the Prime for me and my One Touch for Mary
