I've been using the Relion micro meter since 2/13/16. This evening I tested as soon as I came home from work and got a reading of 163, which is fairly consistent with his usual after work readings. An hour and 20 minutes later, his before injection reading was 456, and recheck a few minutes later was 473. I did a control solution test to check my meter, but I'm not sure if I received the correct control solution for my meter.
(The Relion customer service is closed now- you can only get the solution from them by mail)
I received the solution on 5/7/16 and the control readings were 94 and a second recheck was 96. The directions in the meter instruction book say that the control solutions come in three levels, low, normal and high. The bottle I received says Normal (Level 1) Control Solution, and the ranges on the test strip bottle shows L1 29-54 mg/dL, L2 98-163, L3 264-439 mg/dL. (I just realized these numbers are higher on this bottle of strips than what are listed the bottle of strips I used for the control readings on 5/7, which show L2 as 93-154)
I had originally assumed that the control solution was actually L2, rather than L1 as shown on the bottle, since normal in the instruction book is the middle number and the control readings were in the 90's. Anyway, I was wondering what would cause such a high spike in such a short time, assuming that the meter is correct? He has had diarrhea for the past two days, but this was after I gave him 1/16 of a teaspoon of guar gum as shown on Dr. Lisa Pierson's website for cats with constipation. (I had been giving him pumpkin, but it didn't help him much) I went out today to buy kaolin-pectin for cats and gave that to him with his dinner. He seems ok otherwise. Would an electrolyte imbalance from the diarrhea cause a spike? I will do another test in a few minutes to see where he is at, and I didn't change his dose (Lantus, see spreadsheet) because I don't know what's going on. Hope it's nothing serious; I'll try to find a thermometer to take his temp. He had no food since breakfast, so it was not a food spike.
Has anyone used a control solution with their micro meter, and does the L number on the bottle match the L number and range on the test strip bottle? Thanks!!

You can use miralax for constipation in cats. Can you please link me to relion customer service I have been trying to find a link for them regarding my meter.

They don't have a website or email as far as I can tell. The ReliOn customer service phone number is 855-776-0662. This number is for problems or questions with the ReliOn meters and to order control solution.

Having GI issues could be stressing him, and stress = higher numbers, but I don't know about that much higher..... hoping someone more experience can give you some info! Does he have an infection maybe?

Oh, I hope he doesn't have another infection. It took so long for my vet to let me switch to Lantus because his white blood cell count was high and she didn't want to change the insulin even though I couldn't keep him out of the 500's on Novolin. His urinalysis was normal and the culture, sensitivity test came back negative, no growth. She gave him an antibiotic that I was not familiar with, which made him really ill, so then she gave him an injection of Convenia (I found on this site somewhere that this antibiotic is not good for cats, so I won't let her do that again). After 2 weeks, his WBC was within normal limits.

His +2 reading tonight was 392, so it's coming down, but if it spikes again (or if he is running a fever, etc) I'll bring him in for another blood test.

GI events like brewing up a poop, vomiting up a hairball, constipation can cause spikes in some cats.
