I just heard that the ReliOn meter is not accurate?????????????? It's what I use. I think it's a human meter. What does this mean?????????????? Were my cats hypos not hypos?? When he reads 283, like he just did, is that NOT, in fact, what his BG really is????????? *CONFUSED!*

I'm not sure where you heard this - I use a ReliOn Confirm meter, have for 2 years and am very satisfied with it. If I were going to buy a new meter, I'd buy another ReliOn Confirm or Micro. If it was the vet, yep, they'll tell you a human meter won't work as they're not calibrated for animals. That's true - a pet meter runs about 30 points higher, not too hard to add 30 points to a human meter reading... :-D

btw, there are several different kinds of ReliOn meters - off the top of my head, there's the Micro, Confirm and I think 'Prime'. that last one is one of the new ones that HAS had a bit of issues....

There's also the ReliOn Ultima - which is/was manufactured by a different company than the Confirm/Micro. I used the Ultima from last January until about May. Got really frustrated as it would give me readings that were not logical, I'd take another test and would get as much as 150 points different. It also required a LOT more blood, and since my guy doesn't like to give it up, we changed to an Accu Chek Aviva.

I have used the ReliOn Confirm as well as the Bayer Contour in a side-by-side testing for DCIN in January. You can see the consistency in the results on my spreadsheet. I would feel comfortable using any one of these.
It's not that every meter is going to be exact to every other meter - when you use one consistently, you see the patterns and trends your cat follows. That is what we look at mostly. However, please note, on lower numbers, both the Confirm and Contour read lower than my ACA. Some people choose them to be able to stay on top of a hypo before it comes on - which makes a LOT of sense!

I've not used the Prime, so can't offer any info on that.

All of the Primes so far are good meters. I have used the micro since last February with no problems and am moving to the Prime because of the cheaper strips.

A vet will most likely tell you that a human meter is off b/c they want to sell you the expensive alpha track meter and the continuation of strips.

The only bad human meters we know of is the Freestyle Lite with the butterfly on the strips and any meter with the word TRU in the name.

I have been using the Relion meters for years and have been very satified with them. I have use both the Ultima and Confirm. The Ultima is the same meter as the Precision meter. This was told to me by Relion when I was buying the data cable for it. I believe the Confirm is also the same as another national brand meter, just don't remember which one. The Relion meters are just private branded for Walmart.

The FDA allows glucometers to read within 20% of what a lab test would get. This is good enough for home monitoring.

Human glucometers read 30-40% lower than pet specific glucometers. Its like reading Celcius vs Fahrenheit on the thermometer.

A spreadsheet listing sample data, the +/- 20% and the estimated lab values for the sample data is here.
