We brought it with us to the vet today to compare. The Relion was 110 points off. The vet doesn't want us to use it now. So confused. Charley is going back on the Prozinc. 1 unit twice a day.

What type of blood draw did they do for the comparison? If it was a venous draw then it's no surprise - it's comparing apples and oranges. The human meters are based on capillary blood which is why the ear/pad poke. The only way to truly compare the 2 meters is to both use the same ear poke sample.

Others will be along with more info!

I did not know that.

If the vet is using an AlphaTrak or other veterinary meter, there will be a a variance, especially at higher numbers, with the vet meter reading higher. As long as you know the basics, such as that we worry about hypo below 50 on a human meter and below 80 (I think; someone correct me if I'm wrong about the 80)on a vet meter, and that normal BG is between 50-120 on a human meter (80-150 on the vet meter, it that correct?), you are fine using a human meter. In fact, if you take a peek at the insulin support groups, most who do use vet meters make a note of that because the difference is well-known.

However, if you are testing from a vial that has been drawn, the numbers are, IME, invalid. It's venous blood, and there is anticoagualnt added. When we checked blood from a vial taken just minutes before to an ear stick, both meters read considerably lower (well outside the allowed 20% variance) on the blood in the vial. If you're using blood directly from an ear poke, the variance between meters is expected.

I'm assuming that the Relion was 110 points lower?

I tested mine at the vet twice, using the same blood from an ear poke. It was off by 25 once, and 30 the other time (both cases the vet's AT read higher).

It is well "known", and you'll see it in posts all over the board, that the AT will usually read 30 points higher. HOWEVER, there is one case, with a PZI user currently posting daily in PZI, where her Relion is reading consistently higher side by side with her AT meter, which is the first time I have read that here.

It comes down to this... whatever meter you use, you must have confidence in the meter, and go by what it says (As long, apparently, if it isn't the Freestyle Lite that many people have had issues with recently).
Your vet can't tell you which meter is okay to use and which one isn't okay to use. Hundreds, if not thousands of people have successfully treated feline diabetes using human meters at home to monitor BG. My cat, and hundreds at least, have gone into remission along the way. They work, they are "good enough" to do the job.
I'd stick with the Relion, and go by the numbers it give you.

We use the relion micro. I have given/sent my vet Cedric's spreadsheet on several occasions and he knows what I use and has never questioned it. I assume they have an Alpha Track and that was the meter used on Cedric when he was there last May4-9.
