My boy had a blood test last week and a fructosamine test as he has been losing weight and his fur is very dandruffy. The vet thought he may hav a thyroid problem but thankfully all tests for thyroid and kidney have come back clear. However his glucose levels have gone up so we are upping his insulin. He has been on the higher dose for just on 3 days now so am hoping he will start to feel better today? Am in the uk and he is on caninsulin. Just feel like I did when we started this over a year ago, that I've let him down and should be doing more or noticed quicker. I worry about him constantly and am always checking him. Is 3 days long enough for the higher dose to take effect? Am so worried about him. He's had diarrhoea for a weeks now and have got some fortiflora which arrived today, so hopefully that will help.

Do you test him at home? We test our 4 legged kids just like we would our 2 legged ones. That is the best way to see how the insulin is working and to know daily if the dose is what it needs to be. We'd be happy to teach you how.

I haven't changed his food for the past year, since he was diagnosed, and he's been doing so well. He did have antibiotics about 3/4 weeks ago so am wondering if whatever he had upset his tummy then the antibiotics upset him to. Am hoping the fortiflora will help settle his tummy.

No unfortunately. Am in the uk and vets don't recommend or suggest home testing but he's been fine except for about the last 6 weeks possibly. One day I think he's passed the diarrhoea and then it's back.

Maybe its the fact that I am Scottish, but I would be a rebel and do it anyway! Its not like they are sitting in your home, berating you whenever you do something they dont like. I think vets tend to forget they work for us and we pay them. .. or maybe not which is why they dont want you home testing because then they cant charge you crazy amounts of money to do "curves" and fructosamine tests.

I would start testing to keep him safe. Save yourself some dosh. And of course we have a number of brits here that do test, with or without their vets permission. Maybe we can find you a better vet in your area? What's your nearest city or big town?

(Wendy, my Auntie Mary (Mary 'Braveheart' Wallace!) would be proud of you...)

Hello Becky, I'm in Surrey. Where are you? There are quite a few Brits on the forum at the moment.

Would you consider learning to test your cat's blood glucose at home? It really isn't that hard to learn.
My vet wasn't at all keen when I first suggested to him that I planned to 'hometest' but, nearly six and a half years down the line he's really impressed with how well Bertie is doing.

A meter that you should be able to get fairly easily from pharmacies is the Accucheck Aviva (and ongoingly you'd probably be able to get the test strips for half the RRP on Ebay).

What dose of Caninsulin is Winston on at the moment?

Elizabeth
