Regulation Issue/Inappropriate Defecation

I have written previously about Luke who is getting 7 units of Lantus twice a day. I have had one unsuccessful attempt at getting a BG test...not enough blood. About 3 weeks ago, I discovered inappropriate urination. At that time the vet had gotten an unmeasurable read (HI) from the meter and we increased up to the 7. Since that time, I honestly thought that perhaps maybe things were getting better. By the way, his quality life is very high. He may sleep more than before but he is affectionate, co-exists with my other 3 cats, the most abnormal thing he has done lately is to cry for a special serving of water and he likes ice in it. (This is an improvement because before he was in toilets, licking the bath tub, etc). Today however, I came home to a pile of feces on my runner rug and I took a look closely at the rug and it has been urinated on multiple times. So things are not going as smoothly as I had hoped. I have not transitioned off the dry food yet although I am not giving him an abundance of grazing chow but am encouraging him to eat the wet food. I called and spoke with my vet's wife who is EXTREMELY familiar with this situation as Luke is the first cat that they have been unable to regulate. She feels that forcing Luke to not eat chow if that is what he is used to is just another stressor on a cat that is already stressed. Although she did say that her husband would have no problem with Luke eating wet food but that at this point, they are not thinking that this is the solution. I guess I am looking for any thoughts on this. I am due to bring another cat in for her yearly on Thursday and they said I can bring Luke along for them to do a BG - even if its not at the appropriate time...they would just be trying to get any number that was anything other than HI.

Tell us what isn't working with the testing. Not enough blood? Does he not stay still for you? We all have tips that worked for us and will be glad to share. The most important thing for us was to heat the ear. Are you doing that? Another thing that really helps at first is a bigger lancet - 25 or 26 gauge makes a bigger hole.

If you want to post your city and state, maybe a member lives nearby and could come help.

Hi - I'm new and still haven't read all the rules, so I think I lost my first attempt at a reply. I apologize if this is a re-post.

Anyway, I wanted to comment on the inappropriate elimination question because I've recently had that issue with my diabetic cat, Argyle. She has been hard to regulate, so I've been doing a lot of searching into the questions of how you tell the difference between a cat who is hyperglycemic because they are getting too much insulin (rebound hyperglycemia) and one who is hyperglycemic because they aren't getting enough insulin. I ran across something that mentioned that inappropriate elimination could be a symptom of hypoglycemia. If this problem has just started since Luke's insulin dose was increased, it might be worth looking into that possibility.

In Argyle's case, her number were always "HI" on the meter, so her insulin dose kept going up. When we got to 3.5U twice a day of Lantus, she had a really scary hypoglycemic incident. Every cat is different, but that's why 7U twice a day of Lantus struck me a being a pretty high dose. She has had a tough time recently - in and out of the hospital. She is now on much lower doses of insulin, but since then she's had instances of inappropriate elimination, as well as other symptoms of hypoglycemia like vomiting and shaking. It's confusing, because her BG numbers are still "HI". The issue with Luke might be something completely different, but I thought I'd mention the possibility of hypoglycemia because of the similarity to Argyle's experience.

Good luck!

Jackie,

I am going to repost this for you so you have your own new thread. Look for Jackie Newbie as a new post.

I am afraid you will get lost at the end of this very old thread.
