red bump on chin

The other day I noticed mocha had a small white pimple looking thing on her chin .. this morning that is gone and in place is a red bump .. it's slightly swollen looking .. I tried cleaning around it with a warm cloth but she kept dodging her head around so it might be painful. I "think" it is feline acne and will go down in a day or two, but if not, I will take her to the vet. I just wanted to make sure this doesn't sound like an emergency where she needs to go ASAP.

I think mocha's problem is when she eats she gets wet food all over her chin area and then can't clean it up. I think from now on we'll wash her up after she eats.

If it doesn't clear up and she needs to go to the vet, what do you think they would give her? An antibiotic? What kinds should I avoid (she is diet controlled)
 
One of my cats has had that too. She does have feline acne at times and the vet said that could be that or it could be that she has rubbed up against something she is allergic to. I got rid of the plastic bowls that we used and replaced those with ceramic but it did not clear up immediately. I thought that since the plates were from China maybe they had something she was allergic to. So then i started using small foam plates. For the feline acne, the vet told me to comb out the black specks and clean her chin everyday. I used acne wipes for that. She also said to put 1% or 2% antifungal cream on the chin. Hers cleared up in a couple of weeks. I try to clean her chin now once a week and so far she has only had the red swollen bump on her chin once. After her chin cleared up, I quit using the foam plates after a while and starting using new plates made in China. The one time the red bump came back was after we started using the plates from China. :?:
 
Sounds like chin acne. Some of mine get it even with metal bowls. I shave the area and daily clean with an iodine (Betedine) solution.
 
Thanks for the replies. We use stainless steel bowls but on saturday we had to use her auto feeder and that is made out of plastic. I wonder if just using it one day made her flare up?

Larry, how do you shave their chin? I am talking about the area right under her bottom lip .. there really isn't much hair there ..

Yes I would put money on it. My angel gets that if she gets any where near plastic. PLastic is very toxic to most cats. Plastic causes acne. My vet told me about this years ago. After doing more research interesting enough it is also believe to be the reason why mouth cancer in cats has gown in recorded numbers in the last 20 years. So now to be safe I used ceramic, metal or glass. It is an interesting subject to google. . .
 
Midora used to get acne, but I have used ceramic bowls for a long time (I bought her a raised feeder, since she had joint problems). I always thought it was an alergy or something. She'd get them perodically and I would end up cleaning her up. They are worse than our pimples, since they get crusty - yuck!
 
Thanks you guys .. since this seems to be feline acne/plastic related I will wait a few days before taking her in .. see if it will clear up on it's own ..
 
I spotted the exact same thing on Cheeky's chin a fortnight ago, which was one of the reasons I took her to the vet. It doesn't seem to be acne and the vet thinks she may have bumped her chin and the scab just fell off. It's not swollen, raised, weepy or crusty and doesn't seem to be hurting her. I use crockery saucers to feed mine so I don't think it's allergy.

It's still there, and I'm hoping that the long-acting antibiotic shot they gave her on Friday will clear up all these little things that may have got started when her sugar went haywire--her breathing, I'm very relieved to say, is VERY much improved so it looks like the bottom of the squeaking and burbling was a chest infection as I suspected and the shot's fixing it.

I'm keeping an eye on her chin though. Keep us posted.

Today when I got home from errand running I noticed the bump on mochas chin had broken open and there was some blood sitting on top of it. I cleaned it off the best I could .. should I still wait and see if it clears up on it's own? I have never had this happen before but we don't have a lot of extra money .. just took the car in for a trans rebuild that will clear the savings account, but if I have to I have to ... any experience with the bumps bleeding?

I know when angel used to have the problems. Sometimes it got infected quit quickly. If you cat is a diabetic it is a lot harder for their bodies to heal so perhaps if you wait just wait a day or so. With the holiday weekend coming up you wouldn't want to run into any major problems would be my advice. Better then peroxide put at anti bacterial creme on it like neosprin asp. try to make sure the cat won't get it on his mouth or like it off etc. . Also if it lets you hold a warm wet towel to it a bit. Make sure you dry it then the anti baterial creme. You really don't want an infection in that area. That could get very costly.

It could be acne but there is a difference between acne and open acne. He now has an open sore near his mouth were bacteria can grow quickly . You want to do a little more then peroxide. If it is hot were you are that makes it worse etc. If the cat is diabetic it will be a lot harder to heal so you want to get on it since it is now open asp. try the anto-bacterial creme and a warm cloth a few times in a day and see what happens. If it goes away or starts to go away . . . perioxide won't clean out the bacteria or any infection that may be starting in it.
 
Thanks for the replies .. we do have neosporin, the kind we were using for her ears, would that work? It is not hot here at all, very cool wet and rainy today. Each time she eats I am trying to clean off that area with a warm cloth but it's hard to with just me here .. she is fighting me .. I have to say it is looking just a little better then this morning, not quite as red .. I will see how it look tomorrow and figure out what we should do.
 
Just wanted to update and say that mochas chin is looking much better today .. just a small scab where the blood was the other day .. We are trying to keep it clean with a warm towel after each feeding. She does not like this, but it has to be done.

Yes for any cat wound it works as a first defense. For angel it usually clears it up. if you use a little of that on her today. it might heal it faster so you don't have to do the warm water compresses after she eats. Angel doesn't like it either.


I am so glad to hear that the warm compress is working and that it is looking better. I know how it is with vet bills.
 
right, mocha has only ever ate out of stainless steel .. but on saturday she ate out of her autofeeder, and I think she is allergic to plastic and it caused a flare up .. but never had it happen this bad before, where it actually bled.
